Why a free tech advance?

I dont know why but I recieved a tech advance for no apparent reason. I was portugal(seafaring/expansionist). I researched map making(presumably the first to get it), and it prompted me for my next research project, I selected bronze working(4 turns), then instantly it said it was completed, and prompted me for another one.....


seafaring civilization... mapmaking.. first to discover. It sounds like there is a connection, but I have never read about anything like this.

Are you sure it was map making? Philosophy gives the first person to research it one free tech of their choosing. I was confused the first time that happened to me with conquests.

Its possible it was philosophy, but philosophy does that? that tech seems too good.

Yes, in the Conquests expansion, the first person to get philosophy gets a free tech.

I think that's in the wrong place myself. That obviuosly favours the Expansionist civs who already should be way ahead in techs during the early game. I've moved it to Education, where ever civ can have a chance of getting the bonus tech.

IMO, moving it further back in the tech tree simply hands the advantage to humans specifically, as opposed to expansionist civs in general.

That's not my experience. It's not very often that I manage to get the free tech, I'm usually just behind the lead. But that might have something to do with the way my mod is setup.
