Why a Granary if no deer wheat or bananas?

Howdy,

Why does the game keep suggesting I build a granary in a city that has no deer wheat or bananas?

Does this mean that a granary can be useful for some other resources, or is this just a bogus suggestion?

Thanks much

Because a city gets more useful as it grows, A city without Deer, Wheat or Bananas will grow slower, and a Granary provides more food, and therefore allows it to grow faster.

OK - are you saying that a granary will provide more food in a city that has no Deer, Wheat or Bananas? That is the exact question.

I do not see anything in the Civ manual that supports this. Is there some way this can be demonstrated or, how do you know this is true?

Thanks

A Granary gives +2 food on top of the +1 food bonus for wheat/banana/deer - it says so in the tool-tip...

Yes, the granary provides +2 food and adds one food to deer, wheat and bananas.

It does give +2 food regardless of any other buffs. Thats a free tile to be worked or a specialist. At 1 maintenance (i think) it's almost always worth it, and super good if you have any of the bonus resources. (If you can support the happiness for that extra population of course, otherwise let your best cities grow first).

A pop 2 city with granary can work 2 mines. With republic that's a minimum of 8,4 hammers. A pop 3 city with granary+watermill can work 3 mines for 11,5.
With chemistry those numbers are 10,5 for pop 2 and 14.7 for pop 3.

That's the power of the granary. I rarely use them to grow my cities unless i want to have an additional citizen working a a plantation (always nice to have).
