Why Are Autosaves so Large?

Saves are like... 1MB, and autosaves are ten times bigger. Whats the deal?

I'd assume its because they automatically get replaced in a short time, since they are just backup incase of computer malfunction. So the designers probably felt that it would be a waste of time to compress the save when its going to be deleted 10 mins later.

Autosaves aren't compressed - actual saves are. When Civ3 came-out, originally no saves were compressed, but people's save directories were getting huge. So after a patch, they started compressing them - but on low-end computers, that was taking a noticeable time - a pause at the start of every turn when an autosave was made.

So they changed that to only compress manual saves. that way, you don't get the delay each turn when autosaving, but the saves directory doens't get too large.

Manual saves created by the Mac version of Civ3 Complete aren't compressed either.

Irrelevant? Not really, as Virtual_Alex is a Mac user ;)

Mac players can use my FileValet to manually or automatically compress manual or auto-saves. It can be scripted to compress and archive off all your autosaves to a separate directory, and the compressed saves are fully compatible with Civ3 for Mac or Windows.

Well thats pretty silly. I am going to start using this FileValet. My save folder was 400mb! While we are on this topic, can I change the location of saves? They are in my user/documents folder and I don't want them there.

You can put manual saves wherever you like, although they default to ~/Documents/Civ3 Complete/Saves/.

Autosaves are defined to go into ~/Documents/Civ3 Complete/Saves/Auto/. I don't know if you can change that by hacking the application, but there doesn't seem to be a preference setting for it in ~/Library/Preferences/com.aspyr.civ3conquests.plist.

An Alias maybe? I'm not gonna test it though.

You can set up a symlink if you like. But it still means that your file system will look as though it has the path ~/Documents/Civ3 Complete/Saves/Auto/.

I'm not sure why this is an issue.
