i played alpha centauri first, and i loved it...so when a friend told me about civ, i was curious, read the PC Gamer article about it, and immediately went out and bought it. been civving ever since 
Why are some gamers crazy about Civ?

When I was a yougster there were no computer games, shock horror of it all (how old is he). I palyed Chess against my brothers, father, mother, grandfather (he was really good) , anyone with the spare time. I loved the strategy, the planning and lopping their heads off when they least expected it.
When PCs came out I started playing computer games on a sate of the art Commadore 64. The games were Ok but after a while the became very repeditive and it was time to move on to the next one, most of them are play once and throw away. The first time I played CIV I was hooked. It had all of the stratagey you could ask for and every game was just different enough to make it interesting. Age of Empires, Empire Earth, Shogun ect are Ok, and I play them sometimes when Im bored but they dont, have the breadth and complexity of CIV.
