WHY do we have to use that junk to upload our mods??? (this info is in Civ5 manual)

Using Steam would be much better (we already have to use Steam anyway, so why another service provider????).

I'm assuming you can still install mods the good ol' fashion way (like with Civ4 on Steam now) and that the whole mod browser thing is to attempt to make it easier and not necessary, correct me if I'm wrong.

It's a free service that will allow you to completely integrate your mod in the game. If you don't like it, don't use it (upload it to your servers or a different host).

I don't think there is anything stopping us from uploading/downloading mods from where we want.

No one has to use gamespy, mods can still be distributed via CFC.

Well they were certainly right when they (By 'they', really I should say 2KGreg) said the mod browser would have nothing to do with steam.

I'm sure financial reasons was the motivator behind the decision. Perhaps IGN (aka Direct2Drive, GameSpy) offered better pricing to provide the service.
