Why do you still play Civ2?

During Empire's heyday I was a Mac user -- & the game of Choice was Strategic Conquest. I got into the habit of starting each new game with the next sequencial number -- ended up between 500 - 600 games played, each about six - ten hours long.

Do we have a group of pre-civ fanatics anywhere?

Tried Civ3...I think twice. Couldn't get into it. I don't like the look/feel as much as I do with Civ2...which makes me wonder if there is a way to simplify the map in Civ3 so it's easier to see, at a glance, what's going on. Maybe it's just me.

Years ago, I thought my Civ playing was becoming too big a distraction so I I uninstalled it and snapped the disc in half. Then I bought it again 6 months later.

I *just* got a multiplayer version of Civ2 after realizing that beating the AI at deity level is simply too consitiently easy. So I'm looking forward to playing against real people.

I still play Civ2, because:

It runs in a window, when I'm working or downloading a huge file (with a very slow ISDN connection) I run Civ2 in the background, so I can play a couple of minutes (which become a couple of hours) to get a rest.

It boots really fast. Within two minutes you have a complete game set up. It takes me about five to six minutes to boot Civ3 on my low-spec machine.

Somehow I have the feeling a Civ3 takes much more time. I really have to sit down for a "winnergame". In Civ2 I beat the computer in about ten hours compared to two or three days in Civ3.

Civ2 is easy to edit. I have absolutely no programming skills or something like that, and even I can add units of my own.

I bought Civ2: ToT last week and tweaked it with the No-limits add-on and Civ2 is even better on a 181*181 map!!

But I most admit that Civ3 is a much better game, especially (or something like that) with PTW, and I can't wait to buy Conquests.

1. I know the rules.
2. The map is EASY to read (C3's map is cluttered).
3. Endless scenarios (tho I do wish the AI was better and less predictable).

Besides being hopelessly addicted to Civ2, my machine won't run Civ3. I loaded and played Alpha C a few times about a year ago and although some things looked cooler, it just wasn't any fun for me. So back (happily) to long evenings of Civ2. Just curious about others reasons.

I have both CivII and Civ3, but I find myself playing the older game almost exclusively. Call me a geek, but this is probably because I talk with like-minded geeks--er, friends, about how the CivII game is going for me. Since none of my friends have Civ3, CivII is still the game of choice for me. Not to mention how in Civ3, you have to have all these damn "strategic resources" _and_ the technology to build certain units. Anyway, in a nutshell, learning all the new Civ3 rules kind of took the fun out of that game.

Scenarios is the main reason I keep playing Civ2. There are some amazing ones out there and hundreds to choose from. I rarely play out proper games though - I use Civ 3 for that - but I enjoy Civ2 multiplaying with me friends.

Also, Civ2 has that all-important nostalgia factor of being my first Civ game and my memories of long games into the morning are enough to keep me playing one more game :).

I use no limits MGE and ToT for fun games..
I found a mod for the extended original Tot that adds 2 new worlds and a new alien so... The universal empire of The Tequilla Guys rules the universe :satan: :groucho: [pimp]

1 the scenarios
2 multiple ToT worlds
3 I _despise_ the bloody strategic resources
4 civ 2 runs faster on my computer
5 the vast amounts of maps
6 42 movement nukes
7 no workers only settlers
8 it runs in a window
9 Fundamentalism/Fascism
10 4 worlds

I play Civ2 because no matter what anyone else says, Civ2 is infinitely a faster game. Its fast to start, fast to play and the multiplayer on the later versions of it seems a damn sight more stable

1. Because I'm too cheap/lazy to go to the store and buy it for $40 ($60 if you include the expansion pack). I'd rather wait a few years and buy it for $5... I almost never buy games new.

my thots exactly, guy. besides i still have too much fun, spend to much time playing civ2. only mod i would appreciate would be an ability to make canals and sea bridges (or tunnels).

I've played it half my life (I'm 16).

wow, i can only say that i'm envious. i'm 28, and i didn't even know about civ (1) until college. course once i got some money i got me a 386 and civ2. :o)

i like ya guys talking about this empire deluxe game. never heard of it. and yet i like the idea of automated patrols, pipelines and such. anyone got a mod for civ2 that would enable that kind of stuff?

Ah, the great question of why. Simply (1) it's a good game, and (2) Civ3 won't play on this machine, and is buggy anyway from all I've ever read and seen.

Civ2 is still the greatest game ever created.

Although it has some short-comings, it incorporates so many elements and ideas (and carries them out relatively smoothly), that few newer games today can do.

There is a wealth of scenarios, maps, units, utilities, etc. . .

Plus, what other game allows you to start in 4,000 BC, explore the planet, meet other cultures, wage global war (nukes anyone?), and dream of landing on another planet?

I have played a number of other games, but I always return to Civ.

Cheers!

It's quick and easy, and to tell the truth, it was constructed very well so that you didn't need any expansion packs or extras to truly enjoy it. Everything was right in the box.

Plus, it takes a lot less space than most other games. :D

I still play Civ2 for two primary reasons:

1- Editability. My version of Civ2 is almost unrecognizable from the original, what with all the altered units and such.

2- Depth. I have played Warcraft, Starcraft, AoE, etc. and every time I do, I find myself wishing it was Civ. So I start playing Civ again. :) I don't play to win quickly, I play to micromanage, perfect my empire, and savor its enduring qualities.

'Nuff said

I want the additional features of Civ 3 inserted into Civ 2.
Which ones, specifically?

I ask because I've just converted TOT to look and feel more like traditional Civ2, and I've been wondering whether it's possible/worthwhile to do the same with Civ3.
