Hello fellow civ-addicts!

Question for the lot of you... perhaps you can enlighten me to why the world constantly hates me? it seems like as i pull ahead in the "standings" (pts., culture) the world forms a coalition (standard map w/ 7 civs... so about 4-5 other civs in the coalition) and declares a massive "gang bang" war on me.

My reputation is clean (only declared war once and this wasnt a sneak attack... but successfully defended myself when attacked), little incursions into enemy territory, did nothing to anyone except build my own infrastructure and get into 1 war of expansion which i dominated (i left the japanese with 1 little city... i hate wiping out a civ).

Now... everyone is somehow furious with me.

why ? was it the dictate i forced onto my weaker adversaries after the wars they started ? simple ploy to eliminate the #1 ? what ?

It doesn't matter what you do, the AI will hate you always. I was allied with America against France, and America attacked me within 7 turns of signing the alliance. Even Ghandi attacks you without any provocation. It doesn't matter how good, average or bad you are.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that the computer starts to hate you because you're powerful. Especially when you are getting close to winning, they get scared. The computer wants to win too, so when you become the strongest civilization then the others need to destroy you if they are to succeed. Basically, they hate you because you are successful.

First i have to admit that my Experience is only with Regent-lvl so maybe on higher levels its different.

But i had never had all civs ganging up against me (standard/7civs). I think it depends on your culture, your civ, and how much you trade with your opponents.
The more you trade with them the more they like you; If your civ is from a similar part of the world(meaning European or far-east etc) you get better relationships too. If your Culturepoints are high they will like you too.

The only civs i can't get along anyhow are germans and zulu. And as far as i have witnessed the Zulus have seldom friends and are hated by the AI. Guess it have to do with the attributes.

On regent-level games (1.17f) I usually manage to keep at least one friend/ally throughout the game, but only by throwing them bones (big ones - like tech, cities captured from 3rd party civs, 100's of gold). Usually this civ also has a long border with me and we maintain rights of passage as soon as all the land's settled. Memorable alliances have been with Indians, Persians, Egyptians, and Japanese.

This works even if (IF!) I am clearly out in front in power rating.

Have gotten nowhere with monarch yet.

What sucks is that they hate you if youre strong and gang up on you. If youre weak they hate you and gang up on you. If youre in the middle, the stronger civs hate you, get together with the weaker civs and gamg up on you.

The civs dont seem to fight amongst themselves as they would with a player...

But I have had games, that everything is the same as above but everyone loves you, and I win cultural victory. Strange.

Definently true. Last night the Americans declare war on me (Iroqious). I exit and reload the previous turn. I trade the Americans some gems for tech. No declaration of war, and the Americans remove their menacing troops from my territory without me asking.:)

Also, when a war starts, if you do not seek allies, the rest of the civs will eventually be allied against you. Your first enemy will find an ally, who will find and ally, who will find an ally, etc. You can decrease the chances of this by signing ROP agreeements with everyone, as this makes them more expensive to bribe, since their reputation will be damaged.

Trading luxeries is one of the best ways to keep AI civ's from attacking you. Heck even if they have nothing of value give them the luxery as a gift. The great thing about luxeries is that if the AI civ does go to war with you, they are sevely effected by the loss of happiness. The reverse has even been true for me. There have been a couple of games in which I could not afford to be at war with any civ, since I was importing so many luxuries and gold from them all.

And yes it is very important to buy allies when you go to war. You may not need the ally to defeat the other civ, but at the same time you don't want to fight multiple front wars either. I will often get any civ that shares a border with me and may be an opportunistic threat to signup with me in my war.

Yes if you are not proactive it is you verse the world, but it can very easily be you and the world against your enemy.
