Why I rag on Australia

Bringing a country "to the forefront of world politics" is not necessarily a particularly good point. Pol Pot brought Cambodia to the forefront of world politics.

No, my example was evidence that bringing a country "to the forefront of world politics" is not necessarily a good thing nor did it mean the leader who did so was a good leader or even a good human being.

Canberra has been hitting -5 or so every night this week. My gear was frosting up as I trained on Tuesday and Thursday night.

Labor's biggest problem is the rampant factionalism. Too busy fighting amongst themselves to get properly organised about outing Howard, Costello & co.

@Classical_Hero: Brought us to the forefront of world politics? Since when? We get a bit of a mention when talking about which countries are invading Iraq, but apart from that, what other prominent position in world politics do we hold? Keeping Indonesia happy is a higher priority for us than worrying about human rights, which is not entirely surprising given the way we treat other refugees that weren't from west Papua.

Howard preening himself on the world stage is touchingly pathetic, to my mind. To be honest, Australia's a little country with little real weight in the world, and him pretending to be a big world player is actually pretty sad.

Not to mention his insane military strategy of deploying troops in about 6 or 7 different hotspots across the world all at once.

Why I rag on Australia

Even if we ignor the prostitute* that is john howard there are still many good reasons to rag on australia:

  1. They win at every sport they try at. I mean canada is alot bigger they should do better.
  2. They steal new zealands things and claim them as there own: Russle crowe, Pavalova, Far lap ect
  3. They have crazy race riots and treat the native people like crap
  4. Home and away! (australastion inside joke)
  5. They over prononuce their Es
  6. There greatest natrual wonder, is a big rock
  7. All the poison snakes and spider kill people
  8. They wont shut up about the "SOCCEROOS!!!"

Im sure theres more......

................................................
* John howard whored out the australian military, making australia a target for terrorists to get a free trade agreement.

Breaking his morals (dont invade other nations) in exchange for money (trade) is prostitution!

That's a very harsh analogy.
1. It's not a reason if you're jealous. :p
2. I have never heard anything on that list besides from Pavlova being called australian. (There are many theories on where it came from.)
3. :shake: The cronulla riots were a freak occurence. And the Aboriginal things....best forgotten.
4. I admit, It's gotten worse recently.
5. WE over-pronounce our E's, but at least we don't pronounce "fish and Chips ", "Fush and chops".
6. What abou the great barrier reef, eh? And you don't even have one. :p
7. Yeah, before we developed this stuff called "antivenin".
8. The crazies won't, I don't really care.

And that folks, is what you get from a New Zealander, criticizing an Australian.

actually its not over pronoucing their es its saying their is like es. Instead of F I SH like we says australians say F EAR SH.

So you're saying we say "fish" "feesh"? I doubt it, unless we we're talking about 100 years ago, or an extreme case of ockerism.

John Howard? A successful Prime Minister who has done many bad things. To some degree, those success came as a result of him being Prime Minister at the right time.

I'm at the belief that any government in power for too long is a bad thing. And this government is way over its time limit. His workplace reforms are driven by ideology, pure and simple. He wants to mimick the American-style employment system, for heaven knows what reason. Yes, more people will be employed, but we will have more working poor, screwed by their dispensability, suffering lower wages and worse conditions, because they don't have the power to bargain with their employers. While the workplace reforms may make sense to people earning over $100K a year, for the average John Citizen it gives no benefit.

How much do you guys hear about Australian politics in Canada? We don't hear anything here.

Generally we didn't used to hear very much, until basically JH brought Australia into Iraq. The fact that Britain and Aus both joined that war is what conservatives in Canada tried to use to convice us to go in as well. Didn't work of course.

As noted above Our current PM, Stephen Harper, had forged a close friendship with Mr. Howard before being elected and has looked to him as something of a mentor, generally since they are both similar men running similar countries. That has brought Australian politics a bit further into the forefront in Canada as well. JHs recent visit got alot of attention.

Now in Canada we are discussing aboloishment of the monarchy, also a big issue in Aus, and electoral reform, somethign Aus has already done.

I notice also that there are a number of joint CBC/ABC productions going on these days (look for one called 'Hemispheres', it's often intersting).

I wouldn't have been able to tell you your prime minister's name.

Please don't bother as I'm very hopeful we will be replacing him soon.

I mean you don't use first past the post anymore.

You should have seen the other guy. I tell you, if he had been elected, we would be at war with the US and the rest of the world by now.

Sounds amusing!

Tell us more about this chap, please!

Mark Latham, he is a bully. He was looking like he might win at one point. After he lost, he got sick and went to the back bench, beat up a couple of camera men, and published the Latham Diaries. In the Latham Diaries he blames his failure etirely on his party. There is some really bitter stuff in there.

No, he tends simply to eat the young of his rivals.

The original proposition seems more a case of disliking and individual and wishing to 'rag' on them; there is nothing wrong with that. Projecting it on to an entire country in an ad hominem fashion would be wrong.

As for Mr. Howard, I am a proud member of his party, and am among the majority of the people who have elected him on numerous occasions, due to strong leadership, tax and workplace reform, a social conservative line, good economic management and doing the right thing abroad. I don't agree with his position on gun laws, and am closer to the Tony Abbott's of this world on some of the social matters, but he is my PM and I am proud.

The characterization of Mr Howard as a lapdog is amusing, as he and the government had already espoused and put into action a doctrine and practice of utilizing force when necessary overseas, as done in East Timor. Similarly Mr. Blair's doctrine of humanitarian war and intervention was going on in Sierra Leone before Mr. Bush entered office.

I suppose some could characterize the action of activating the ANZUS Treaty as lapdoggish, what with the Prime Minister being in Washington, seeing the smoke, and the small matter of Australian dead and OBL's previous declaration of war.

On the matter of the 'Little Australia' advocates, who would characterize us as not a power and with no role to play on a wider stage, I heartily disagree. East Timor, Ramsi Assist, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, AMTF, ongoing CT operations in the region, Tsunami and Earthquake relief - we bat out of our league, and do so because it is the right thing to do.

Mr. Howard has been a conservative mentor and influence on more than just Mr. Harper; he has demonstrated how to win, stay in office, and carry out the conservative agenda. A great success, which does irk many among the doctor's wives set.

Not being able or willing to distinguish between an individual, even a political party, and the country they are from, is however, not the mark of a mature political outlook. I do hope those that hold such views age like a fine cheese, to a mature blend of cheddary goodness, before contemplating citizenship here.

So, enough of the prosaic words to the vassals of common simplicity, Simon!

Let us all in on when your coup d'État is to happen...!

Surely the genetic labs in Ayers Rock have been busy...Cloning an army grown from the DNA of
Otto Skorenzy for the masterplan of 'Nea-so-Thule' - Or have we moved to the 'other' plan?
