Why is Civ 3 so much more addictive then the latter versions?

@milr, where can I find the link to such developments?

I have a laptop with 16:10 and a desktop with a 24" 16:10 display, and on both it worked perfectly by setting the KeepRes=1 parameter in conquests.ini
(Meaning that the screen is not "stretched", but that you really see a larger portion of the map.)

Lanzelot

Lanzelot, how do I get in to make that change? I'm a dummy with all that stuff. ;)

It's in the Conquests.ini file which is in the your Conquests folder. Under the type column for Conquests.ini, it should say configuration settings. It's a text file. Double click it and then below the top line [Conquests], add the line:

KeepRes=1

Then save the file to keep the change.

I believe he's talking about FreeCiv, TheRat. It's on sourceforge somewhere.

FreeCiv was based off of Civ2 though, so I'm probably mistaken.

Now that I've got a comp that can play IV I play it. I like it better now than when I tried it before. Haven't tried V yet, so I don't know.

Is UAC off?

I've tried to make that change:

KeepRes=1

But windows explorer won't let me save the change. Is there some trick to it?

Bring up Notepad in the Start Menu.

*Right-click* on it and select "Run as Administrator".

Once Notepad is open, navigate to the civ3 folder in Windows Explorer and drag the .ini file into the Notepad window.

Edit the file and save -- that time, it should let you save.

A possible alternate method is right click on the Conquests.ini folder, in "general" under "attributes", uncheck the "read only" box if it's checked.

Obviously, if the box is not checked, then that wasn't the problem.
