Why is FPS worse the RTS?

Apparently me razing and murdering millions of people in Civ 3 isn't as violent as me shooting a demon in the head in Doom 3.

It isn't that bad; some of them are converted into slaves, if it makes you feel any better.

Almost no one can become a commander or a leader of RTS games, but everyone can be a gunman and randomly shoot people in the streets. That's why FPS(oh I'd better blame my beloved GTA series, they're easier to simulate in reallife) has a huge negative hit in children,as they set a really bad example for these inmature children to ape.

@plarq..

You basically said what I wanted to post on this topic.

On a side note, I think it also matters as to how culturally, and socially we are attuned to death and killing. A violent FPS may not seem so revolting if violence is a matter of daily fact for you, but I'd be shivering in my boots if I found out Gen, Musharraf was playing Civ3;)

They why modern military spend Billions on such warfare simulations.
To teach tactics.

Does anyone have any actual data supporting that playing FPSs predisposes you to become a killer?

Of course people have done extremely detailed studies in Mass media before. (not computer games but rather TV and movies)

There was a (backward but peaceful) country in which they had no TV, very peaceful, no crime, long history of buddist pacifist lifestyle. Just recently had electricity and running water.

Next thing comes satelite TV, Everyone gets a TV and watches it, Even the most poor households get one.

What do you know, violent crime, anti-socail dehaviour, youths out of control, crime rate up, first murder in living memory. Some of it is from clash of cultures but all researches conclude it is from TV.

Have you seriously seen some of the infantry "blue screen" warfare ????
Infantrymen laying prone in full gear, firing rifles at a blue screen, mowing down simulated attackers.

It has a strange "duck shoot" quality about it.

The demons in Doom aren't?
Play along with me on this one ;)
Doom IS a game for Christians. Those who say otherwise are obviously misguided. The violence is an illusion created by Satan to deter good Christians (like you and me ;) ). Doom trains the good Christians such as ourselves in what will be the eventual battle between :jesus: and the  . ID Soft, blessed it's name, will help bring about the second Coming, can't you see?

bible says nothing about Christians going to war with satan(at least not in the sence your portraying).

People do/did often complain about MK being too violent and gory.

I really don't care how much 'gore' is in the particular genres.

That isn't the correct question. I don't think FPS really produce violant people.
The horrible thing about them is the 'Shoot first, then think' ideology. Of course, this is exactly what military trainings wants to teach you.
Back in 1988, I objected halfways during my military service exactly for that reason.

I don't want to loose my reluctance to kill other humans without thinking before - but the shooting practises are aiming for this.
You start out with a ring target, then moving squares, and anytime nothing else is available, shoot on human-shaped targets. The later being so close you can't miss them...
Backstabbing, mass-raping and scorched earth may be valid military tactics as well, but I want to incorporate neither of them in my civil life repertoire.

A couple of years later, the very same thing became a popular 'hobby' :vomit:.
I consider that insanely disgusting.

Are you referring to paint-ball?

You may not think so, but there does not seem to be any shortage of people who do.

Substitute "shoot" with "hit", and that's what elementary school taught me. Partly unlearnt it since.

I still find it hard to see how the inhibitions can be lowered by something that doesn't trigger the inhibitions in the first place.

The situation is complicated than that. I presume you a talking about Bhutan, a small landlock kingdom between India and China. TV was legalized in 1999; and indeed some blame television for a recent increase in crime. But St. Helena, of Napolonic fame, also only recent adopted television, with no great increase in violence.
