Why is there no SMAC: 2?

I would be just happy if they'd re-write the original to work with modern OSs (like Windows 7) or in my case Snow Leopard OS X.

I'm keen to play the game again, been an avid player since it was released end '99. Always played in Windows environment. Now that I'm on a Mac, don't really want to purchase and install Windows (in aboot camp partition), just to play the game. I know there is a Mac version, but that worked on powerpc architecture and not in modern intel macs.

so if Firaxis or EA (that owns the game) would re-engineer the original game to work on modern OS, I'll buy the game in a flash

Love the original.

Reasons a remake is needed:

1. Bugs which were never fixed.
2. AI sucks. There are whole dimensions to the game which the AI was never taught.
3. Interface. Can't command multiple units at once. Stacks of 20 units in Civ4 take 1 click to move. In SMAC/X they take 20.

The graphics, for me, are fine as they are. Improvement would be nice, but more variety on the same level would please me equally. I mean, no matter how good graphics are, once the initial awe has worn off, you get so used to them they don't even matter. So more faction-specific graphics, graphics which show the kind of building in a base, etc.

Also, new graphics would allow a better workshop system. If you work in 3D, it's easier to add things to a model on certain hard points or nodes - also texture changes also make changes easier than the voxel system of SMAC. This increased artistic freedom could go a long way to fix a problem with the workshop, namely that units look very similar and are hard to distinguish from each other on the world map.

...also, another thing about graphics: The old graphics were made with a maximum resolution of 1024x768 in mind. This *needs* a change, as current screens have higher and higher resolutions - and running LCDs on non-native resolutions looks horrible (and makes text blurry and harder to read).

Cheers, LT.
