why spread religion?

Well, we've heard that you can buy great people with faith depending on your policies. Generals and admirals for autocracy, Engineers with Order, Artists with Freedom, and I think Scientists with Rationalism was also announced.

Besides the benefits you can get from beliefs, there's also diplomacy. It will be a very good idea to spread your religion to civs you want to be friendly with.

Imagine you have religion A and the rest of your continent has B. You will most likely be bullied, or be the bully ;)

But there will certainly be situations where spreading it is not beneficial.

Two questions sort of along these lines

1) Do followers gain enhancer beliefs too or do they only affect the founder?

2) What is the point of accumulating faith after you've adopted all the beliefs you can?

1. We don't know. I hope it affects all. Otherwise, the founder clearly is always better. If you're only missing out on a founder belief, it might be worthwhile to let a foreign religion take over instead even if you founded one, if it has better options.

2. You can use it to buy units and Great People, for example.

A more important question can be 'Will it worth spreading religion if u are not its founder' ? They are going to be civs which might have some sort of faith advantage but they may not go for founding religion such as Songhai or a civ might be unlucky & fails to found a religion then what will they do about the faith ? Buy an army, build masjids/pagodas/cathedral or spread the dominant religion in their land ? And what will they use their Great Prophet for ?

Spreading a religion that is not yours can be usefull for bonusses in your own cities, and diplomatic advantages when spreading to other civs. Ofcourse, you'll be helping the founding civ more than yourself, so it'd be tricky :)

Will it be possible to be a secular atheist state? A state based on science and reason, instead of stone age morals and talking snakes..?

Im sure there will be someone who will choose Freedom. Just to try it out sometime.
No really..

We already know that the Culture Bomb has moved from the Great Artist to the Great General, so one of the options is that the GA gives a certain amount of culture, or is the only GP let that can start a Golden Age.

We don't know that the culture bomb has been moved; just that the GG can do something similar. The Great Artist might very well still have the culture bomb ability.

I guess you could try to collect as little faith as possible, but you'll probably end up founding a pantheon anyway and there would be no way to stop foreign religions spreading in your city. In the late game religion will have less effect, and I assume that if you haven't invested in faith you wont be getting enough of it for religion to have any effect on your game, so you could be secular, however your people would probably remain religious so I don't think you could have an athiest state.

I'm also going to have to point out that your view of religion as fundamentally opposed to science and reason is a little out of whack, and it seems like you're just fishing for a reaction or asserting a controversial statement as if it were (excuse the pun) gospel truth.

Besides the pantheon, you can stamp out all religions qith inquisitors. I doubt it'd ever be a good thing to do though :p

I was under the impression that inquisitors require a religion to use, and therefore wont stamp out that religion?

Hm, I think you may be right. In that case it's certainly impossible to keep religion out unless you manage to keep your cities far away enough from other cities and don't let any missionaries through.

Perhaps using an inquistor+missionary would be more effective in a city with a lot of non-state religion population rather than using two missionaries.

i'm pretty sure that will be the case. I think missionaries can only convert non-religious population. So if all population already has a religion you'll need to inquisite that outof them first :p.
