Going over the List of Confirmed Features (again), I stumbled over the Barringer Crater as a natural wonder. Why the Barringer Crater? Why not, if you're in Arizona, pick the Grand Canyon? And how does a Crater add two production?

For one the canyone was may have been harder to implement graphically. Two, all natural wonders provide bonus production and gold... just cause they're special unique things to find on the map.

In sense they're like resources... So it kind of creates neat little spots to settle and consequently fight over I guess.

I do find it odd that the Grand Canyon is not in there. When I think natural wonders, the Grand Canyon is definitely up there at the top of my list. The Barringer Crater? Well, I had heard about it, but I didn't know it by name.

That's true. Just because we haven't seen something yet doesn't necessarily mean it won't be in the final build (unless of course it has already been determined that it won't be in, and natural wonders don't fall into that category).

There were only a tiny handful of natural wonders in the preview builds that we've seen. I'm sure there will be many more in the released version.

For exemple in of the deleted screenshots of Azazzel there was a screenshot of the civliopedia list of natural wonders and one of the natural wonders we confirmed wasn't there on the list Mount Everest so it's possible that the Grand Canyon might come in the final release

Perhaps, many more released as DLC. Natural wonders don't really affect the core game, so could easily be DLC.

I really hope they add this Portuguese natural wonder the Island of Pico the Largest Mountain in Portugal and which occupies the big part of that island.

Not to mention that it's probably easier to add a crater to the terrain than the Victoria falls.

Otoh, I'll be interested to see what our more artistically gifted modders will do with this.

It should be possible to rename Natural Wonders. The first person to gaze on the Barringer Crater certainly didn't say "Wow, it's the Barringer Crater!".

Edit: I should say "name" the wonder since the point is that it has no name at discovery.

agreed with ottocrat on the naming.

But with regards to the natural wonders: are these are randomly placed terrain features that provide additional bonus and there is only 1 of each and not necessarily all of them appear in any given map? Do these occupy the whole Hex and if so can they be worked or improved via worker?

The Grand Canyon would be pretty awesome! It'd have to be at least 2 tiles, though (not that it would be a problem, considering there are already natural wonders spanning multiple tiles).

Apparently they did :)

But seriously, I hope we are able to name/rename everything in the game. It is our game after all.

Large holes in the earth can sometimes reveal exposed mineral deposits, which would add to production.

In addition to this, craters are caused by meteor hits which some times deposit rich mineral veins (Sudbury basin in Ontario, Canada - one of the richest Nickel deposit in the world)

Well one assumes all will be on the largest map type, but on say a duel, their would be room for hardly any if any.

Most occupy simply one hex, with some exceptions, Mt Everest take's up 5/6 + hexes, as well as it may always be on a large mountain range.
The great barrier reef takes up two hexes and that's a coastal wonder.

They can all be worked and give +2 Production & +3 Gold, Improvements can't be built on the natural wonder hexes, they probably cant be moved over, though that's just an assumption, so they act like mountain tiles with the exception that they can be worked by citizens. Assume-ably. I also assume each hex that the natural wonder encompasses all give the +2 prod/+3 gold.

When you discover a natural wonder, the game should state that your people have discovered a majestic (mountain/crater/reef/etc...) which is an inspiration to your people. What would you like to name it?

When AI civs are first to discover them, just have a list of names for mountains/craters/reefs/etc... and randomly pull one from the appropriate list for the name just as was done in Civ IV for great scientists/artists/generals/etc... If it is a unique feature, then it has one name that is always used when discovered by a non-human player.

All I know is that if this happened my games would have a lot of "butt mountain"s and "vagina reef"s

I personally think the grand canyon is amazing (hiked it, camped at the bottom, been to havasupai repeatedly, love it) but I'm not sure I'd classify it as a natural wonder - it's just a big and spectacular canyon. There are similar "grand canyons" elsewhere in the world, like in Mexico. Another thing is, if you were to have stumbled upon the Grand Canyon early, you probably wouldn't realize its extent immediately - it covers such a large distance as an overall package. Plus, there's other "crazy" terrain and park-worth areas all over this part of the country (zion, bryce, sedona, painted desert, etc) so the GC doesn't necessarily stand out that much given the context.

What's funny is I've been in AZ for 20+ years and lived 40 miles away from the crater for 10+ years and never heard it referred to as "Barringer Crater" (had to wiki it) - it's just called "Meteor Crater" here. And I never found it interesting enough to visit since I find the more natural wonders here like GC, painted desert, etc to be more worthy.

Anyways, I expect that as an ancient explorer, find something like a monster-sized meteor crater would be a little more shocking than finding a big canyon, since canyons are essentially natural and a perfectly in-tact and huge meteor crater is very unnatural. A meteor impact like Barringer (it's a very perfect crater in the middle of nowhere) would definitely stand out.

Ultimately it's a game and who cares (what I always say). The devs probably wanted to put in a few things that were slightly different instead of wearing out the same old same old, kinda like how they mix up wonders every time thru.
