Why would the AI do this?

Man that is strange. I've never seen the players techs redded out.

What is the message when you put the pointer over education?

Do you have the "cannot trade techs unless researched by you" option enabled? If so, that's probably why they don't want it--they want to trade it later on.

EDIT: I just looked at that shot again... the tech problem is not the most amusing thing in it.

Suryavarman II - French Empire.

Or they are currently researching it (in a normal game) and are almost done researching it.

I do have no tech brokering on. I didn't think of that. I'll check back with them in a few turns and see if they got it reashearched.

I would speculate that they are already researching it, with few turns to go. Though Gaius could be right, too.

Yeah I think that's exactly what's going on. Otherwise this system could be exploited to slow down AI's progress.

Maybe he wants to keep his people stupid so that they won't realise how horrid their lives are? I dunno...I woke up at 6 and worked a 14 hour day, give me a break!

Maybe he went crazy from having to rule the French people? :p

Otherwise, I support the "wants to research tech himself" explanation. ;)

has anyone noticed something else odd in the screenshot?

Why does the fish appear for both parties (redded out though) and why do some resources appear redded out as well. This is new, you can't even give them resources any longer for free?

It's probably to keep the human player from exploiting the AI. He has fish, you trade him fish, so he has excess and trades it away, then the human can cancel his deal and leave the AI down a resource. It's no big deal, but if you could gift them, you could do this with important resources like iron and kill your opponent economically before hostilities start.

Or to stop the player trading another resource for the fish just for the +you supplied us with goods bonus in relations.

How so, if the AI is still trading crabs (look at the screenshot before making comments please). So, you could still trade SOME of your resources, but not all. It's a little weird.

You can now trade for resources you already have. As to why it's redded out, I don't know.

My guess is that before the advent of corporations the AI does not want more than 1 resource so won't trade for it. While a player could prepare for a coming of corporations by getting more than 1 resource before they become available, the AI is too stupid and could be easily exploited that way imo.
