Wich Civ2 feature would you like to see in Civ5?

I always preferred the civ II trade route system to that of the later civ games, since it actually meant you could play civ as a builder, trader or militaristically. It's probably not a great idea to basically copy/paste the system to civ V, but it is a great idea to update it.

How cool would it be to see important trade routes appear on the map ? Auto-caravans every 3-4 turns that can be destroyed by others (raiding trade routes for gold, at the expense of the trading nation). You'd have to actually weigh up whether it's better to trade with far away civs for increased risk of raids but better rewards or your neighbors for less raider risks but less reward...

Oh, yes, also agree with this trade routes idea you have. Now we can just "blockade" trade routes, but it would be fun if we could raid the caravans, and have to protect ours from other raiders. A new way of dealing with barbarians, perhaps.

I liked the different types of barbarian spawns that appeared in Civ 2. Much more interesting than Civ IV's single warrior, archer, axeman or swordsman. Plus, you could beat the barb leader and get like 100 gold ransom. That was pretty cool. There was the traditional barbarians which usually consisted of cavalry or legions. Then later, there were pirates with frigates that would attack you from the ocean. Later on, you would see big stacks of musketmen and cannons. And much later, there were religious fanatics.

Bring back the wonder videos of the real wonders. Not an animated cartoon creation of the wonders.

Bring back the advisor videos. Those were fun.

This is more from Civ III. I liked how the leaders outfit and setting changed with the times.

I think they should bring back the senate for the democratic forms of government which could prevent you from starting a war. The senate could also add some other issues for democratic civs with random decision pop ups.

It is worth thinking about bringing back the max science limits on the slider depending on your government type. I have not played Civ II in a decade so I don't remember the exact numbers but on despotism you could only set the science slider up to 60%. When you got monarchy, you could raise it to 70%. And republic and democracy allowed 80%. My numbers might be wrong, but that was the basic idea. Thus, gold was a much bigger factor.

I don't like the concept of slavery being used to sacrifice population to hurry production. Go back to allowing gold to hurry production right from the beginning. Maybe slavery should add 1 food and 1 hammer per tile with a slave but with increased unhappiness. And maybe you could only acquire slaves when you conquer a city and enslave half the population. Kind of an in between occupation and burn the city to the ground.

I liked how roads were neutral. Of course, there was no culture then, but being able to use enemy roads would speed up the wars greatly.

Just give partisans the abiltiy to withdraw while defending and give them a very good chance of doing this. but in ciV units won't die when attacked so this might be useless maybe just make them suffer very little or no damage in battles even if they lose you could also make them invisible to units more then one space away to make them difficult to find and have more spawn the longer they survive.

Something like this.

Caravans. I'd rather micromanage these than combat units. These made OCC fun. Food caravans were great too.

i agree and from Civ 2 partizans and Empire split when you conquer the capital.

Yes, that was a nice feature I've been missing! Burt the revolutions mod for civ4 does a good job of achieving the same end. Still, driving straight to the enemy capital and expecting the split of the enemy felt nicer than the more realistic current mod.

And the advisers, obviously.

Maybe it's been a while since you played, but I don't think you - or anyone else - wants civ2 stacking back. Civ2 stacks aren't really stacks as they are in civ3 and civ4. There is only one defender in a stack. If the top defender loses, the whole stack is killed. It is not really stacking. It is just the ability to end a move in the same tile. That's why nobody ever mentioned the "SOD" until civ3 came along: because it didn't exist.

What I want back is mostly graphical, the old palace/throne room. It was only graphical, but gave a sense of progress and achievement. It could be changed to have some relevant role in the game: new features could give bonuses of some sort.

Pop up: "12 units destroyed"
or

"10 units were lost"

good times ...

Pop up: "10 units were lost"

THE EDITOR... the Editor from Fantastic Worlds was so much more engaging then the Civ III mod editor and a lot LESS complicated then modding for Civ IV.

Number one things I miss are non-gameplay factors, as so many have said. The realistic wonder movies (I especially liked the old-timey newsreel ones), the High Council videos, and the Throne Room. Just added so much charm and fun to the game - truly the main reason I go back to Civ II again and again.

Bring back the caravans, too - trade is such an important part of the rise of civilization, and it should have that kind of tangible (and disruptible) flavor, especially before the modern era.

Zones of Control! For real, if I could add one thing to Civ 4, I'd add that. Though with Civ 5's changed emphasis in combat, I'm not sure if they'll be necessary anymore, but in Civ 4, ZoCs basically made defensive warfare viable too. In UC2, you weren't immediately boned in PvP if opponent went military right off the bat since you were able to protect your improvements with a few strategically positioned Phalanxes, and multiplayer games actually occasionally got to newer eras. Of course, Civ 2 had ICS so meh...

Though yeah, Civ 2 wonder movies and advisors kicked SO MUCH ARSE too. But definitely, if naming only one thing, Zones of Control. Civ 4 would be 100 times better with them.

Yeah. I don't really care if they are real life or CGI, but I miss the videos that are about the wonders instead of some generic build animation. Advisors were cool too.

Hell yeah!

Stacking units too.

And the throne room! Loved that place.
