Alright, we've decided to proposition the players. :p

Basically, we're currently working on a Wiki. Quite a bit has been done, but there is far more left to do. Since this is part of our overall push for documentation, we REALLY want it to feel polished and complete. It already contains all info from the FF wiki (and the format is quite similar), though that is honestly just a small portion of it at this point. We cannot open it to the public just yet, as it is being built off the test version, not the released version.

Now, what is this proposition?

We're looking for people who can devote at least 30 minutes each day to the Wiki. In return, you gain access to the tester's group, which brings with it access to a test version of 1.3. At this point, some mechanics are not finished but it is very playable, and actually faster than 1.23. Hopefully, that is enough payment.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, for what's been done and guidelines to contributing:

Finished Work

  1. All Civilization pages are in, though they are currently lacking much of their text/UU/UB/Unique Mechanic entries.
  2. All Leaders are in, and finished. They are all in 3 categories; Leader (base category), Status (Leader Status category), and Alignment (Alignment category, 9 of them and smallest overall)
  3. All Traits are in.
  4. The majority of Heroes are in. All civ heroes, most religious/unaffiliated heroes.
  5. Found out how to use an image to link to a page; No more will clicking the leader's icon on the civ screen take you to the icon's page, you will be correctly sent to the Leader's page.
  6. Building on that, we removed the civ name bar from leader pages and added a clickable button of the civ's flag. Have done the same for heroes as well.

A few guidelines:

  1. There are several precedents in place already; Please follow them. If you aren't sure how to set things up, ask here and I'll reply as soon as possible. I check the forums pretty often. ;)
  2. You MUST register in order to edit. Best way to prevent spam edits, so it's just something you'll have to live with. It is not difficult or time consuming to edit, though. ;)
  3. Page layout is rather firm at this point; We like it. When adding a new page, copy the code for an existing page; You'll be able to find something relevant, as we have Leaders, Civs, Units, Heroes, and Traits. Can use Traits for spells/promotions, same amount of info needed.
  4. Always use headers in this form: ===Header===. Never use ==Header==. The second creates an underline, which does NOT cooperate with the sidebar. It looks like crap, so just don't do it. :p
  5. Always add a relevant category at the end of the page. In the case of leaders, this is the Leader category, a Status Category, and an Alignment Category; Allows you to filter after selecting the Leader page. Just go to the page and you'll see what I mean. ;)
    • Several other categories have subcategories as well. Units have Heroes and Unitcombat, for example.
  6. Image sizing should remain consistent. If you're unsure, just send me the raw; At this point I've done all images on the wiki, so I can hammer out some more. Already have all the Hero images prepared, even for those not added yet. :goodjob:
  7. When naming a page, simply use the real name. For example, the Amurites page is under just Amurites. Not Civilization:Amurites, as it would list as that in the category. If you need to have multiple entries with the same name (such as with a Leader that is also a Hero) simply add a (TYPE) after the name. See Korinna the Protector (Leader) and Korinna the Protector (Unit).
  8. When adding an image, if it should link to a page make sure it does so. There are NUMEROUS examples of how to do this; Every civilization page has at least one. In the FF wiki, clicking the leader button takes you to a page for the art itself; In ours, it takes you to the leader page. It is a massive improvement, in my opinion.
  9. Otherwise, try to stay consistent. If there's already a precedent for what you want to do, stick to that. (For example, subdividing categories)
For now, it would be best to stick to the categories on the main page already; Finishing Civilizations (adding UU's/UB's/Unique Mechanics), finishing the Heroes and other Units, etc. Categories already exist for Promotions, Spells, Civics, and Techs, and we'll add others (Terrains, Improvements, Features), but unless you only want to work in one area we should finish what's started first.

If you are a modmodder, feel free to make a page for your mod; The categories already exist, on the front page of the wiki. Players may not be able to see it yet, but having it ready as soon as it goes live can only be a good thing. You can even use multiple pages (Looking at 25Hour's Leader pack there), all I ask is that you do not place them in the standard categories; Use a category with your mod's name, and either link to it from the main mod page or use that as the main mod page. ;)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you're interested, please let us know. Again, we need a guarantee of a certain amount of time a day (Basically, don't want people volunteering, working 5 minutes, and then playing the test version from then on.), but really, so long as we can see that people are contributing I'm happy.

Sure I'll do this. What about leaders or abilities that don't have any text? Should we add them in, or wait until the game version has them in the civilopedia?

Well, I'm not familiar enough with RifE to help but I wanted to mention I really like the way you're working on it :) Though in-game documentation is easier to access, but wiki that can be edited by players has better chance to be updated. And considering amount of things changed (not to mention those that will be changed that you're not willing to tell us right about now ) it will be very, very useful :)

We'll be making a post about leaders without background shortly (IIRC, Opera compiled the list but then went to sleep; I was supposed to do it a few days ago but got busy.), so writers can contribute to it.

If you meant Strategy text and not Descriptions, please feel free to add them. That's actually a big part of it; Putting it on the Wiki is easier for people to contribute, and then we can get it from the Wiki into the game. ;)

Right. The goal is for the Wiki to be fairly complete (Already more so than the FF wiki, would love for it to be more so than the FfH wiki :mischief:). Any new strategy text or descriptions added to the wiki will be compiled into a list and added to the mod itself (after being reviewed, of course), so this is really just a good way to allow people to contribute strategy/descriptions to the mod. As well as being a very good way to browse for help. :goodjob:

Hello,

Long time lurker first time poster. I'm a big fan of your modmod, and I would really like to contribute/help (and of course play the test version).

Like many people here I have been playing civ since I was about 13 years old (17 years ago). I only got Bts when fall from heaven 2 was finished, so I think I am qualified to contribute strategy, and be a cut and paste monkey.

I'll send you a message with info on how to download the files, and the wiki's site, but unfortunately I cannot add you to the tester's group yet so you won't really know what's changed.

Can't join a group until you have at least 5 posts.

EDIT: Actually, I can't send you a pm. Apparently you need a certain number of posts for that too.

Thanks for trying, that is the reason I didn't get in the testers group in the first place...I could put up 3 more posts somwhere

I am in; a wiki is a much better place for this sort of info than the disorganized text file I'm presently maintaining.

sweet, thanks.

Still not allowing me to invite you; Have to be a member for 5 days and have 5 posts, both of which you have. I think it's just going a bit slow for now, will check again later. ;)

Hi, I'd like to volunteer to do some wiki...ing? for some stuff in RiFE. However, I can't promise exactly a 30min slot a day, unfortunately I restart uni in about a week and the deadlines in the upcoming exam term might mean I can't always fit some of this in, especially nearing June time. After that, I'm free though :D

However owing to the necessity of procrastination whilst undertaking any piece of work, I'll always be able to make myself some time during a week to contribute to a wiki. I can do some text stuff which include category links to start with, but I can quickly pick up on any other stuff for wiki editing if needed.

Let me know if you'd like me helping with this :P

Sent invites out to hotpie and isthmus. ;)

In the process of converting all of the pages to use templates rather than having the formatting code on each page; Pain in the ass for me, easy for you guys though. Templates can be found helpfully listed (along with standard images) on the help page; It's on the left bar of the wiki.

I'd be very willing to devote time to updating the wiki (not sure if I have the post count yet either).

I haven't posted that much but I've clocked up a lot of hours of game-time on the mod in the last few weeks including lan games with one of my flatmates.

Also I really want to see what you're doing with 1.3 because I need a juicy improved carrot to get more lan games :P

This sounds fantastic. Never doubt the power of out-of-game text, even if it is simply taken straight from the Civilopedia. Though I don't think I can work on it myself, I want to wish everyone the best of luck and speedy working :goodjob:.

i would do this if you don't mind me just taking stuff straight from the civilopedia, don't have much in the way of civ strats as i rarley play a nation more than twice

That's pretty much exactly what we need for now (So much to get in place... Still trying to finish converting pages to templates, so they're standardized and will all change if we update it), so I'll send you an invite. ;)

Now, to keep hype up... Here is Grey Fox's contribution to the wiki. ;)

So... Very nice. :p
