In your opinion do you think that Civ 5 will beat Starcraft 2 record of:

Best Selling 2010 PC game in 24 hours
fastest selling Strategy PC game

No it will not.

It has not been embraced by the Koreans. Furthermore it won't encompass 1998 gameplay wrapped in shiny graphics.

No chance. Civs market is waaay smaller than SC2. Doesn't mean it wont be a better game though ;)

No. Civ 5 doesn't have the worldwide recognition or the massive fanbase of starcraft. I mean, I prefer Civ over starcraft in every way, but you can't ignore the realities of the market.

those points are valid. This game gives hope of change, good or bad. Starcraft 2 did not give me any hope for 12 years of vengeance. I actually wouldn't be surprised if more time passed in real life then did in the game in that time span... But to answer the question, there is no chance not even if we all buy 2 copies of the game like some crazy petition states down the board a bit...

No. In the Web Store I buy my games Star Craft II has been number 1 on the pre-order chart for months. Civilization V is not even on the chart.

You sound very upset about the success of the game, so I doubt any of the following will matter to you, but for everyone else....

None of the builds from SC 1 apply to SC 2. The damage system was overhauled. The three factions were given even more individual character, yet remain balanced, a feat pulled of very rarely.

The campaign is essentially like playing mass effect, except each mission is an RTS instead of a shooter. It is about 20 hours of gameplay, probably more than that if you play on the hardest difficulty.

The map editor blows the socks off of anything that currently exists to date.

The game is also much more enjoyable as a spectator sport and has an outrageously high skill cap, which is why the South Koreans play it as their national sport.

Upset by its success ?

Umm no, I contributed to its success by buying it. Disappointed by it, well yes I am. There really is no difference from a gameplay point of view to the original.
It is a fairly generic RTS formula that as always is beautifully balanced for multiplayer.

Horses for courses mate, I got what I paid for..but it is already stale for me YMMV.

Guess 12 years on I expected a little more.

No, and thats a good thing. If Civ ever sells that many boxes it means the game has been dumbed down way too much.

Video games as a 'spectator sport' is about as boring and pathetic as it can get to me. The general draw to actual sports is that athletes do things most people can't. Anybody can click a mouse. I realize it takes a lot of practice / quick thinking etc. to become a pro Starcraft player or whatever, but its not exactly something I think one should aspire to. Sitting on your ass 12 hours a day so that you can become great at manipulating a game... as a job.

I hope the rest of the world never joins Korea in their national enthusiasm for e-sport, cause it will only inspire more kids to sit on their asses for longer and longer periods. In short, real sports that actually encourage youth to get out and stay healthy >>>>> e-sports.

Anybody can click a mouse.

Anyone can throw a ball? That's a terrible argument. You pretty much try to sum up all the incredible work, skill, practice of a person in a single derogatory statement like this as if to dismiss it.

Finding enjoyment by watching other people do awesome things may not exactly fit into your notion of a 'sport', but I think it is a completely valid pass-time. Heck, don't we have a HoF here? Don't we marvel a little bit by the people who achieve amazing things in the game?

As for the topic at hand. CIV5 simply will not be as popular as starcraft. People haven't been chomping at the bit for 12 years to buy it. And there aren't as many fans of the game going into the sale. Just that simple.

IMO CIV 5 wont beat Starcraft II.
If we had been waiting 12 years before its release then maybe.
Furthermore isnt this like comparing apples and oranges. As it has been stated earlier, surely its about getting the game right, and not just release it to get more sales.

SC2 sold over 3 million units on the first day. There is no way Civ5 will beat that record.

Well I played the SC2 beta, and I can't say I was all that in love with the game, the beta was just that though, and was only multiplayer, I did buy SC2 anyway though, (or rather my brother pre-ordered it for my birthday months ago ;p) and I will play the single player campaign atleast, which should be fun, Civ5 will be miles better, but better games don't necessarily sell better.

No chance of breaking those records, a historical turn based TBS cannot compete with a sci-fi RTS even before the latter being backed with a TV ad campaign. The only records up for grabs will be those such as fastest ever sales of a Turn Based Strategy game.

Embraced by koreans? Hah right. That's why sc2 is so successful in korean internet cafe, ranking under 26th most played... o wait.

1998 gameplay? That statement is like sc player saying "I played civ2 once and when I bought civ5 I was disappointed by same old boring turn by turn play".

Considering major complaint from hardcore fans are theskill intensive mechanics missing from ORIGINAL replaced by new mediocre playstyle reminicent of casual rts like cnc..... You have NO IDEA what you're talking about mate.

We can agree on one thing though. Sc2, a game where it doesn't satisfy hardcore fans nor casuals. Its wc3 all over again.

I beg to differ. Most people can toss a basketball through a hoop. Most people cannot perform the equivalent of playing 20 games of speed chess simultaneously.

Sure, anybody can make a layup, but not many can make 3 after 3 with the greatest athletes in the world guarding them, and most people simply can't dunk no matter how hard they try or how many years they put into it. Anybody can hit a ball with a bat, anybody can throw a ball, but not many people can throw a ball 95 mph or hit that ball 400+ feet. Those are the kind of things athletes do that most people can't, and that's why professional athletes have millions of fans while I don't think professional gamers will ever have anything close to that.

Lol at your 20 games of speed chess analogy. Stop trying to make it sound like these are super geniuses or something. I'm sure the people that excel at professional Starcraft are intelligent and all, but there are a lot of people out there that could do the same thing if they dedicated their lives to it. You need to be intelligent and a quick thinker, yeah yeah, but there are a ton of people out there with those attributes that would never have any interest in dedicating their lives to a video game. Video games are supposed to be for fun and leisure. Personally, I'd rather spend my game time actually playing rather than watch others do so. Watching video games simply gets me excited to play video games, so its really not compelling to me.

Not a chance in hell will it beat sc2.

Heck it's total sales might not beat sc2's first few months- or weeks for that matter.

Not that I care really. Civ4 is a frustrating way for me to unwind and I hope civ5 can fit into the same mold. Monster sales or not.

Btw I had no idea that sc was a national pastime in korea.
