Sure, anybody can make a layup, but not many can make 3 after 3 with the greatest athletes in the world guarding them, and most people simply can't dunk no matter how hard they try or how many years they put into it. Anybody can hit a ball with a bat, anybody can throw a ball, but not many people can throw a ball 95 mph or hit that ball 400+ feet. Those are the kind of things athletes do that most people can't, and that's why professional athletes have millions of fans while I don't think professional gamers will ever have anything close to that.

Lol at your 20 games of speed chess analogy. Stop trying to make it sound like these are super geniuses or something. I'm sure the people that excel at professional Starcraft are intelligent and all, but there are a lot of people out there that could do the same thing if they dedicated their lives to it. You need to be intelligent and a quick thinker, yeah yeah, but there are a ton of people out there with those attributes that would never have any interest in dedicating their lives to a video game. Video games are supposed to be for fun and leisure. Personally, I'd rather spend my game time actually playing rather than watch others do so. Watching video games simply gets me excited to play video games, so its really not compelling to me.

But apparently you spend a lot of time watching sports? I think it is weird how this breaks down:

What do you call a man who spends almost all his life playing basketball, and focuses solely on getting really good at it and the skills it requires? An Athlete.

What do you call a man who spends almost all his life playing Stacraft, and focuses solely on getting really good at it and the skills it requires? A fanatic degenerate. Apparently.

Are you one of those people that sees a well balanced house of cards 5 feet tall and just says "Guess you had too much time on your hands?" and walks away? Bah. BAH I say!

In your opinion do you think that Civ 5 will beat Starcraft 2 record of:

Best Selling 2010 PC game in 24 hours
fastest selling Strategy PC game

I would have answered yes if we were living in an alternate universe where there were more people with a more refined taste in games (not saying that SC2 is actually crap).

Civ, for all its greatness, has never been targeted for "causal" gamers. If Civ V beats SC2's records, then that means either two things:

1. The world became a bit smarter
2. The game was dumbed down like Spore

If you ask me though the more interesting question will be: Will Civ V have more awards than SC2 by the end of the year?

Video games as a 'spectator sport' is about as boring and pathetic as it can get to me.

Yes, watching someone else play video games all day is a possible reason why the word 'going poastal' exists. It shouldn't be done.

This question is like asking if Mac sales will beat PC sales. Or it's like asking if US Democrats will stop wasting taxpayer dollars and destroying the econeomy. The answer is a pure and simple No.

You must be new here, because the Republican party hasn't stood for fiscal responsibility in my lifetime. The bible or the M4 have long superseded anything resembling fiscal responsibility, and its looking pretty good that the Democrats have improved the economy more than the Republicans over the last 20-30 years. If you don't believe me, listen to the republicans that are saying the same thing, there was just an article about it in the times two days ago I believe.

Starcraft II had about 2 years of advertising, including numerous international conventions which invited gamers to try the game. They also held a massive 4 month beta test with huge numbers of players at the end, and has advertisements running in various forms all over the world.

At this point, Civ 5 is 2 months away and Firaxis won't even show us a video of basic gameplay. They certainly won't let random gamers try it out, and apparently their main method of advertising is to write posts on this forum.

Yeah, I don't think Civ 5 is going to break any records. Unless word of mouth is extremely strong for this game, it might not even show a profit.

No, and thats a good thing. If Civ ever sells that many boxes it means the game has been dumbed down way too much.

o.O

Yeah.

No Civ5 will not outsell SC2. SC2 has a much larger following. The FPS genre has a much larger following (than the barely existing TBS genre). Blizzard tends to knock whatever it does so far out of the park it's in a different class of developer.

I expect Civ5 will be "knocked out of the park" for me and many other civ players but we're fairly small in number by comparison to the masses SC2 will pull.

Starcraft 2 was so big that I expect July and August's PC game sales for the average gamestop to be larger than the entirety of all of 2010. Until Blizzard comes along, they ignore PC :P

I will honestly love Civ5, if it's of the same caliber as Civ4, but it's not going to be a mass marketed success like Starcraft is.

Sports involve athletic ability. Starcraft is not a sport.

Civ 5 will be fun, but I don't think it will even be number 2 or 3 for the records mentioned in the OP. It's just not that kind of game. It's more of a niche thing.

I just hope it makes them enough money to pull together civ 6 in 5 years (when I finally get bored of this one!)

I think the fairer question is will it beat Civ 4?

the 2 games are leagues apart. both fantastic, but leagues apart.

Because professional basketball athletes can apply their skills to a lot of other things, and are healthy people, who promote kids to exercise.

I'm not saying their shouldn't be E-Sports, but like many other people, I hope for the sake of the fitness of my home country (Canada) and America. I'm being realistic, because lots of fat people reuiqring expensive medical supplies > higher taxes.

Just to point out that most of the pro-esports teams do encourage their players to excersise regularly as it keeps both the mind and body in top condition. Most of the british guys (Dignitas) I've met in the esports teams are relatively fit and healthy individuals.

but being good at starcraft 2 doesn't make you an athlete. It does mean you have extremely quick reflexes and the ability to assimilate information very quickly and produce the correct response/counter. In much the way that an athlete is conditioned so is a professional starcraft 2 player. An e-athlete (ethlete?, or 37h1337)would be a good name. Or maybe apple could sponsor iathletes.

And no CiV (V) will not outsell Starcraft 2. For atleast 5 years.
