I'm curious, some folks seem to be champing at the bit hard for PTW with Civ III....almost as hard as I am over the editor (all this champing has put me through 3 bits and almost all of the cruddy dental work the Navy did on my mouth)

I know this polling won't be an accurate sampling, but like I said, I'm just curious as to what others think.

I tried Multiplyer in an earlier version of Civ, as well a few other turn based games like Politika.. my big problem.... I never could find a game to play.

How worth it does everyone think PTW is going to be?

Based upon previous experiences I've had with multiplayer games online, and what I've heard from others, I'd have to say no right now. Who knows, someone may surprise me and change everything.. But for the time being, Nah.. I just want the editor finished so I don't have to use a PC anymore. The last two patches have given me more problems than it's worth at any rate.

The AI is far too stupid!
Deity ist just difficult because the AI got an huge advantage on basically everything. I would love to play against humans.
Of course it will depend on the mechanism of the mp, I don't think I'll enjoy it when I have to wait 10 min for each turn...

Against other players, diplomacy will be far more important, fun and realistic.
No human player will ever attack as stupid as the Ai, not even a lobotomised one!

but I guess we'll never get it anyway (or for v1.21f, since 1.29 doesn't seem to have a good chance at appearing).

An editor is certainly a nice thing but I don't care much about it

I've got enough civ-playing friends (around three ;)) to put up a good LAN game, so yes, I can't wait. Well, actually, I can, since I haven't quite mastered Civ III yet.

I used to play a lot of CivNet and Civ II Multiplayer HotSeat games. I even enjoy playing HotSeat against myself. Actually, it wasn't long ago, about two weeks, that I played a marathon-all-nighter-continue-next-morning-after-four-hours-of-sleep-civ2-game with one of my friends. The first time I've played a Civ game from start to finish in one session. Talk about having a life ;) :D :rolleyes:

It'll be worth it to me. I'll wait. I am hoping for some diplomacy surprises in PTW, and the new civs will be fun. I'm not one to get bord w/ game-play - great imaginaiton! :)

One of the new features I'm really looking forward to is airbases. At the moment, I'm forced to keep conquered cities just so my bombers can move into range of the next target.

Heh.. keeping conquered cities has always been part of my strategy.. I love seeing that map covered by one color!!!

Yeah, me too!
On the other hand I like to wipe out all other civs, too. And sometimes you just don't have enough culture...

Personally, I can do without playing against other people over the web, etc. I can also do without additional civilizations and the other lame stuff included with PTW. The AI in this game is so lame and stupid, if they are not going to update that (to make it at least as cool as in SMAC) in terms of diplomatic options, etc, this expansion pack is just not worth the doe. I was very disappointed to read that there are no indications of updating the lame diplomacy screens to provide the player more options, etc. Although, air fields do sound cool...I am not sure why they chose to take this out of the game anyway (weren't they there in Civ 2)? I wished they would have added all the candy without dumbing down the game. All I want is the editor so I can create real scenarios. However, I am sure that once PTW has been out for a while, I will try to get it on sale somewhere... but by then, I will have moved on to other games, Civ 3 is already beginning to lose it's appeal with me anyway.

>Will PTW be worth the wait?

Vote: "None of the above" or rather "I will wait and see".
My guess is that MacSoft, wisely after the lessons of Civ 3 (basic) will wait to port PTW till the PC side calms down with patches and stuff, and also that many Mac users will wait for a while before they buy it, not wanting another 6+ months wait for promised features. Might as well wait before buying.
Aside that, considering the lagginess of Civ 2 multiplayer I have my doubts about Civ 3 multiplayer. Multiplayer does not appeal to me.
And some things... "Easier-to-use interface for streamlined management and better control." should have been in the original Civ 3. But I will wait and see.

I voted that it's "worth the wait"--there's no choice anyway. The game really needs:

a) a boost in creative options for play and producing scenarios;
b) Editor abilities provided by the latest PC patches;
c) new civilisation options;
d) the chance to play against others;
e) a wider community for Mac players.

PTW offers solutions to most of these--some of the new civs look great. For me, PTW appears to offer most of what I originally wanted from Civ3 as an update/replacement for 'Alpha Centauri' on my hard drive. Essentially, PTW provides the opportunities for historical simulation and future extrapolation that give me a kick in gaming. Multiplayer--as I posted elsewhere--provides the opportunity for long-term campaign/team play which would be even more immersive than the early days of playing against the AI when the game was first released.

Please, please, please do the port, Macsoft!
