I haven't bought Civ VI yet, though I played Civ IV more than I care to admit, and Civ V a good amount as well. I recently got a new computer and am considering getting Civ VI now, but I'm surprised we're just getting more DLC and there's no word of any expansion pack yet. Is DLC the new model for Civ? Will we ever get an expansion pack? What does everyone think?
Almost certainly, yes. But highly unlikely before this fall; my guess is spring 2018. I don't believe that they've ever released an expansion within a year of the vanilla release. Civ V released a large handful of DLC before the first expansion.
There were about 2 years between the Vanilla release of Civ V and the G&K.
Now the previous versions only had 1 year difference but they didn't have DLC, so the 2 year difference is more likely for Civ VI.
I would guess maybe in time for Xmas this year for the first expansion at the earliest.
and then maybe another one next year. with a bunch of DLC in between. they may stretch it out because they want people to be playing their game until the release of the next one.
I can't see Civ 7 or BE 2 or whichever they lead to being release any time soon. I would say at least 4 years from 6 to 7
You know the game has only been out for 7(!) months, right?
Wait for another year or so.
With Civ 5 it was DLC for the first two years, then expansions packs with one year intervals.
I think it's safe to assume a similar pattern with Civ 6.
I actually tweeted the civi team about that this week. No answer obviously.
As for the calendar, BERT was released quite fast, maybe a year after BE so we never know. But spring 2018 sounds more likely indeed.
Tbh, i dont care about the release date, i m just dying to know what they re working on. For CIV, g&k was obvious as vanilla civ didnt have religions. But with CiVI we already have most of what existed in V, so it s really anyone s guess as to what the first expansion will bring to the game. And that friends.... Is very exciting.

Actually, it's even the first six, of which two are yet to be released. They raised the amount of included DLC after they realized for some people with currencies other than € oder $ the DDE did not pay out.
The next set of DLCs is to be anticipated no sooner than July. I, too, would be very surprised to see an expansion pack this year. I would even lean forward and say it's not going to be released before summer 2018, rather even fall 2018. Spring feels unusual for Firaxis tbh.

I think they've also never had this high of a frequency of DLC, which I believe will probably increase the amount of time between proper expansion packs. Have to keep in mind that we would prefer content to be added at intervals so that there is enough time for us to familiarize and become proficient with what is available without being overloaded but not so long so that the current content becomes stale, they focus on how to release the material in the most profitable way. Sometimes these two agendas sync up well, other times they don't.

Sometime in 2018 seems likely. Gods and Kings Expansion for Civ5 was released on June 19, so I'm guessing the first expansion for Civ6 will be released during the summer of 2018.
