Latey I've run into a new problem:confused: . I get my civ built up to a decent size, then my neighbour civ start up with all these silly demands for spices, inscence or they will destroy me[plasma] .

This is fine it give me a chance to aquire a lot of elite units, but the problem is that I get entagled in a drawn out war. Which means that My discovery of new techs is drastically impeded ( by the time I get ironclads other civs are sailing around in the hot new detroyer models)

Do I give in and pay the "mafia" or do I risk going to war, what do you think?

Don't give in or play mafia. Instead you should trade those luxuries or resources away, even cheaply, before they demand those things from you. :)

The most effective way is to build up a strong army from the begining (even with crappy units). Make sure you are gearing at the top spot of the power chart. The rest can be purchased when you have a strong empire.

Go to the histograph and select power then look at the chart (keep your eye on this to learn your place in the world, the demographic screen can give you lots of info about your position in the world also.). If you are as strong as the AI who makes the demand tell them to hit the road. If your not as strong you need to build up your power rating and in the mean time give in to demands.

[edit] Hades types faster, even when he is scrathing his head. Oh well.
