How many of you people actually WIMP out of a game (restart) cause you are in a bad neighborhood or (like I read somewhere) when you have no IRON.

I personally play it out. I am only my third game and this is the first I have stated in Greenland (figure of speech). I am holding my own.
Why worry when worry kills

I don't ... And when I'm tempt to, I like to imagine that so many civilization didn't have the choice to continue or not anyway... do you imagine the aztec saying "damn, no iron in sight... let's restart ..." sound silly for me :p

So I like to keep it as realistic as possible... anyway, the worst that could happen is that you don't survive the test of time :D

I most enjoy the games where I am missing an important resource. The only games I quit are the ones I am winning handily.

Same here, for me the juice is overcoming the challenge and earning the thrill of victory. I've yet to a continent without Iron though, lots of times I may not have it right away, but I'll take out a neighboring CIV that does have it before he can make good use of it.

They are probably embarrassed because of the title of your thread.

Well, if my starting location really sucks as in surrounded by snow and mountains, I will restart. :)

Why would you do that. On the game I playing now I started with no grass or any special resource and found it very challenging to catch up. I walked 5 turns and planted a good city. Mind U its only my third game only on Warlord, who knows I might restart it (wimp out) at higher levels.

But, give it try. it could prove challenging

The only time I ever restart is when I am given a VERY poor starting position, AND I meet more than one civ within the first few turns. On monarch and higher, you will be lucky to get even a few cities built. If you start on an island by yourself, your original starting position will slow you down, but it will not cripple you. Unless the spot my settler starts in is really good, I will usually explore a few squares before I start my first city. I am always very pleased when there is a hill or mountain in the next square that I can move my worker onto to get a good view of the surrounding terrain.

No, I don't restart. If the starting position truly blows then it's not going to be a very long game anyway. I usually play expansionist civs so I can scout out a good city spot before the capital is built.

I've found it's always best to lay down your city on the first turn, by 5 turns it's too easy to fall way behind. Sometimes I've played it out, others I don't depends on my mood.

What irks me, is continents. On stanard size maps, I never see more than 2 decent sized ones and it's almost always the same, 4-5 civs on one, 2-3 on the other. My humble little P3/800, doesn't like playing maps that are bigger.

I don't restart at the beginning, but if it gets to be about 1000 A.D., and I can tell it's just completely hopeless, then I'll probably retire, chalk it up as a loss, and start a new one.

Sometimes it's worth walking your settler around a bit before making that first city, if the first turn looks ****ty. Don't forget to move your worker first to get a "free" look at a little bit more terrain.

I try not to restart, though I will be truthfull, and admit that I have at times. If you wait for the perfect starting position, or quit when you notice that you are lacking in resources, you will miss out on one of the most enjoyable parts of the game. There is no better feeling than taking a resource from a neighbor who has an excess of that resource and will not trade it with you. An even better feeling is to conquer all of his land area that has that resource, and after sticking it to him on the peace treaty, offering to trade it back to him at an excessive price. :D

I do. Quite often, actually. Some reasons for re-starting are when I discover that I'm sharing my starting position with everyone and their mother. Also, if it's a really terrible landmass (too much tundra/desert) that will ensure that I'll fall behind in the tech race. But nothing annoys me more than being hemmed in by a bunch of agressive civs who plop cities down everywhere, leaving me room for only 8 or so cities before having to wage war to increase my land........I'm one of those players who like time early on to develop and grow before making contact with the other tribes.

I like crowded maps. Much more exciting.

I won't restart for want of Iron. But, if I see a neighbor before 2000 BC then I'll restart. My strategy is to build a civ then go to war.

If that is 'wimping', then so be it. I'm not playing the game for your approval.

Heck, not only do I take the starting spot I am given no matter what, I also have my CIVILIZATION handed to me randomly!

(I always choose standard random map, 70% water continents, 16 civs, raging hordes, and all other climate features random)

I will keep playing until I decide its time to do other things, and then I ask myself if I think I would like to continue it at some point - if I do, I save it, if I don't I discard it.
