Has any body tried running BTS on Windows 7 64 bit?

This weekend I have tried several times to play a BTS on Windows 7 64 bit. Even in the beginning of the game it is slow. The units are slow to move after given orders When the view moves from one section to another section of the map it is also slow. The audio seems to be fine. The opening splash screens once starting the game seem to be fine.

When I was running Windows XP pro 32 bit on this same notebook the same thing would happen to a lesser degree and not until the late stages of the game. Rebooting would help, but not now. I have turned off all Windows automation and other "pretty' features.

I have not other problems running any other application. All though Civ is the only computer game I play.

Any ideas?

Windows 7 Pro 64 bit
AMD Turion TL-60 2 gig dual core
4 gig of ram (PC2-5300)
Nvidia GeForce 7150
Western Digital 320g 16meg cache
BTS w/ Patch 3.19 (no mods installed)

I play Civ4 BTS on Windows 7 64 bit too, but i haven´t encountered any of the problems you are mentioning. I think it has a lot to do with processor speed. You got a decent amount of RAM and a decent graphics card, but Civ4 mostly relies on the strength of your processor. Windows 7 also uses more CPU memory than the old XP, which impacts the game speed. Have you downloaded the latest patch? Maybe that will help, but i´m not sure.

Have you tried toning down the graphics to a lower quality setting? If that helps it at least pins down whether the problem is the laptop graphics or the CPU.

Unfortunately I run Win 7 on a Phenom II desktop, so I can't replicate your problem. I haven't even tried to run BTS on my Vista laptop. It gets laggy just running Warlords (and the mouse pointer flickers somethin' turribul).

It could well be a driver issue, however HP don't list W7 drivers for your notebook. NVidia list a reference driver for that card for W7 64 but that is older than the one you have. :dunno:

If I go to Nvidia's website and run their hardware detection tool: I get the following message.

The manufacturer of this system requires that you download the driver for your GPU from their support site.

I also get something similar if I manually download and install the drivers. I had to chat with HP to get the proper drivers.

Yes I have put the graphics level on low. Since it is not required to have high graphics quality after installing and setting up the game to my liking I always set the graphics to low. I also turned off all of Windows animations and other "pretty" features.

With Civ 5 being released in October, I have been wanting to build a new desktop any way maybe this will be my extra motivation to save the money.

I use Windows 7 Ultimate 64, have no issues installing (Have had to do it recently twice in the space of a day), do you have UAC on? Installed as administrator?

Also check Nvidia Control Pannel to make sure most the settings in there for high end graphics are set to Application Controled. Not sure if this will help or not ;)

I didn't have any issues installing Civ. The issue is playing it.

I attempted to play a game of Civ 4 Vanilla on Saturday night. It started out a little slow but as the game progressed and my map grew it got slower. It eventually got to a point that I quit because it was so slow.

I would give a unit orders to move and it would take at least one full second for it to move. Whether attacking or defending units would walk up to each other then freeze until the battle had ended.

I guess I am just going to have to find a way to get that new computer!!!

Thanks for all the suggestions though.

I have Win7 64bit with a i5-750 and 4GB RAM, Radeon 4890.
This is a FAST system by all accounts. The only game that has performance issues is BtS. All others run smooth even with high graphic settings.
So it most propably is a BtS issue with Win7/64bit.
Has anyone some other advise than the usual "do you have the lates drivers" ?
Please?
