Here's a 1st impressions road test;-

As for cost, I understand it will depend on whether or not you have a registered copy of XP or not - registered users may well get a download for free, although don't quote me on that.

There's an MS webcast on the 28th to talk about the new features, so even if it doesn't launch today it's very soon. Some people have already got it through MSDN.

EDIT: I think people with a lot of USB devices are going to be annoyed.

I think it would be wise to hold off on buying it right away. Since it apears not to support much hardware yet.

iirc there's no point to a 64 bit XP at this point, no drivers or devices use 64 bit. I heard that we'll need to wait for Longhorn to fully appreciate 64bit processing

Am I wrong?

Yes. Go read the 1st impressions link.

Can't wait for longhorn, and would gladly wait until then to try on this whole 64 bit windows experience. Unfortunately I'm sure work will end up forcing me to try it rather soon...

From what I have found out windows Xp 64 bit is not going to be sold to resellers. The only way to get it is from an OEM or upgrading your XP pro.

Hey! I now know of one person looking forward to longhorn! :D

To be honest, the graphics screenies look good, but aside from that, is there any real need for longhorn? XP is rock-solid stability-wise, so for me security would be the only issue. Who says longhorn will be any better for that (although I would hope it would be). Also read something that they are still hoping to get Paladium (next generation secure computing platform) ito longhorn. That alone would put me off (although I doubt my hardware supports it ;))

to be honest, I'm not too sure...... I'll agree XP is quite solid for me (except for the occasional patch required) but every few months we hear that MS is dropping an aspect of their new system to get it out in time, which is kinda frustrating. it's all these new features I'm looking forward to seeing, such as the new way of storing information on your HD (I heard someone mention that it's going to resemble an Apple System but as I can't back that up nor recall what an Apple System looks like, then I have to ignore it)

the 3D desktop looks kinda fun though. not for any practical reason just because it looks PREEEEEEETY!!

Amazing new features? What else would one need that does not already have? Multi-tasking, audio, movie-player, 3d games?

I'd personally like a transparent system that handles processes and allows users to allocate processor and memory resources and full run/run-at-startap privileges. Or to assign a process a specific RAM and HD space to do it's job (for instance, to prevent something altering the system register or any kind of system file or even test potentially unsafe software). But MS will never do that and it would certainly not be worth moving to a new OS...

Essentially I'm almost more excited for longhorn because of what it will mean for other OSes. Like it or not, most features existing in other operating systems go unnoticed by the mainstream until Bill validates them by putting them into windows. On the other hand, as soon as bill announces a new feature, everyone else tries to beat it before he can release it.

Security wise they are promising improvements, and I know they've been working on it for a LONG time now. Palladium would be a huge turn off, but i can't see it happening. I'm looking forward to metro and avalon. Also, Longhorn will handle IP-addressable devices on a local-area network just as Windows XP now manages hardware connected via USB or PCI. Depending on the implementation that could be a nice feature as well. Sure there will be downside too, but if it improves on XP I can't argue with it.
