If so recently on a friends computer Microsoft sent the update message saying an update for internet explorer should be downloaded. However it doent do it correctly and certain files it says are damaged.

Everytime you try to redo the update the same thing happens.

And now you cant get onto hotmail and you cant print from the internet. Very annoying.

Could anyone help???

BTW its Win 98SE

Might be a worm/virus. There's one floating around right now. I have the email at work, I don't remember what it's called. But it tries to trick you into thinking you need an upgrade of IE.

So my question is, are you doing this from www.microsoft.com, or are you surfing the net and a pop-up comes up saying this? If you're at Microsoft, I would try to d/l the IE 6.0 install package seperatly, and run it from a clean boot. Otherwise, might want to run your virus scanner for trojans.

I have 98SE and have problems downioadling updates from MS - Windows Update tells me there's "no new files" but when I dug up through their archive I uncovered 20 different security fixes!

I would reccomend having an update to IE6+ on a CD. Downloading a 75MB update from MS is not an option for me on dialuip.

This is the "Extended support" MS promised. I dread the day when MS cut it completely so I suggest 98 users sort this problem out sooner rather than later.

Zonelalarm and adaware make a nice combination for dealing with trojans and parasties. Not perfect but nice.

I once called my ISP and said that my browser was out of date (we first got Netscape (3.0) from them, and something didn't work, so when I called them they said they were using another browser than Netscape), and they sent me a cd with IE 4.0. My point is that if your ISP doesn't support the browser you're using, maybe they send you a browser they support.

I had to go all the way back to May 13th to find the email. Turns out an email was recieved here at work, with the subject "Windows Update Notification" saying to go to www.windowsupdatenow.com, and update from their site. This is not the windows update site, www.windowsupdate.com, and is the site for the trojan package.

The email came from windowsupdate@windowsupdatenow.com, and this is not a valid Microsoft Windows update email address.
