Hi everyone

Can anyone tell me what the problem is with Windows Vista (apart from it being Windows Vista) that will cause CIV4 to abort following the 'Check XML' part of the initialisation?

The Automatic Windows update loaded some update or another two days or so ago and CIV4 has not ran since and I don't know which update it is

Kind Regards

Hi cowboykiller95

I got the following responce from Firaxis Games support desk and I quote

Hi Cliff.

I would recommend downloading and installing Directx9.0c on to your syste,. This will not overwrite the DX10 of windows Vista, but will add the DX9 compoent to Vista. This is needed because Civ IV is built around DX9, rather than DX10.

To improve compatibility of Civ IV with Vista you can download the 1.74 patch from the support section of www.firaxis.com

http://www.firaxis.com/downloads/Patch/Civ4Patch1.74_Final.exe

After downloading the patch you may get a "d3dx9_32.dll" error, which stems from not having the latest update of Direct X 9c installed on your machine. This will be due to the fact that Vista uses DirectX10. You can download and install DirectX9 to your system and while it won't overwrite Directx10, it will add the DirectX9 components to it.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...c0-1b2f-428e-bd79-02df977d17b8&DisplayLang=en

When you run the installer it will ask what directory to extract to. Create a new folder on the desktop and extract the files to the new folder. After it has finished extracting, you can go to that directory and run the DXSETUP.exe that can be found inside.

It's long winded but it works no problems since and the CIV4 runs very well indeed :goodjob:

Hope this helps
