Hi,

My system has no problems with Civ2 and my Geforce2, although not great, shouldn't have trouble.

However its terrible.

I't looks like a DOS game or maybe just a game in 256 colours.

I have all those indeo drivers, i havent a clue the problem.
Some suggestions would be appreciated.

Its Civ2 Gold edition if that makes any difference.

I'm sure you've seen this thread:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20703

But your problem is "just" the video driver and/or video mode.

Personally, I do not allow windoze to control my video.... for that task, I rely totally on the program called "Power Strip", located here:

http://www.entechtaiwan.com/

This solve all resolution, refresh rate, and more techincal stuff than most people even know about.

It will not repair a defective driver... you need to consult the video card's site.

Are you using the most correct and stable video drivers? That's not likleythe cause of your problem at this time, but you should still DL the current dirvers & install them.

PS, Indeo drivers are NOT NOT your video card drivers. If you are using a GEFORCE card, I perfer the nVidia reference drivers at:

www.nvidia.com

I do not have Win XP installed for reasons I won't get into, but you can set your video modes via Windows in the Control Panel --> Display.

Note: Be careful, as you can physically damage you monitor if Windows makes a mistake about correctly IDing your monitor, card, or if the data table in XP has an incorrect entry (a few are incorrect). In general (not a hard rule... I don't have your hardware manuals to check), don't allow your monitor to be driven at more than:

1024x768x16 bits @ 60 or 72 Hz

until you are sure you have things under control. ... Don't accept a setting like 1024x768 @ 100MHz, unless you are sure your monitor can handle it.

Good luck.

:)

Thank you for your advice.

Unfortunately none of that helped, or didnt apply.

Any other ideas?

Based soley on what you described in your first post (it is not a lot of detail to go on, however), I'm saying it is simply the windows choice of screen setting/mode. It is deciding the wrong thing, like maybe 320x200 4 bit color (for example). I can't see it on your machine with my own eyes, though.

This is a familiar problem with people who demand exact performance from video, like me. I will not dare try and tell people how to directly edit the Registry and force video changes, because one slip, and there is no safety net... you monitor electronics are physically toast... fried.... kaput.... no good.... ruined. I have see people screw that up time and again in real life, and repairs cost about $60 to $140, depending on labor.

So what I am saying is that you should try changing the setting via Control Panel. many times, that will not work (e.g., Windoze will set you machine to a different mode for it's own misguided reasons to complex to explain here).

The best way, in my opinion, is to simply let Power Strip do it for you. Get it, and study it (it will take a while, because it is very very powerful in what it can do, and it can fry your monitor, too, if you override it's settings for your specific hardware.... but it does protect you as long as you don't override).

Powerstrip will make the proper settings to let you run whatever resolution, depth, refresh rate you want. It will do a whole lot more, even adjusting video card memory speed and processor speed (very good if your card is running hot and/or unstable). PS is particularly good for games and 3D shooters. It will let you change settings on the fly (even within the game itself). I'd just use it to force Civ to whatever video mode you want. I cannot tell from what you posted (not enough detail) exactly "why" the mode is set by Civ or Windows, but if your OS won't override it for you, Powerstip can. :)

Sooo........ do what you wish. ;) But based on what you've posted, that's what I'd do (PS always runs on my machines, beginning at bootup, from the STARTUP directory).

Maybe you could post a screenshot of what you see?

If you are playing Civ2 for the first time it will look like crap compared to today's games. You should see Civ1.
Its all about gameplay.

I have played all the "civilizations" from civ1.

To be honest this problem no longer bothers me. I only dug the game out to play it multiplayer on a network, in wait for the expansion for civ3.

Thankyou for your advice.
