wordpad vs notepad

Playing a particular mod (RI 3.1) and sometimes I want to edit the xml files. While all of them are listed as xml file type, some, when opened with note pad, are all mixed up. If I then open them with wordpad, I can see, and alter as desired. However, when I save the file (as an xml file) and try to load the game I get failed to load xml errors with these altered files. This only happens with the wordpad/notepad ones, the other xml's which can be opened with notepad, are fine when altered. Any idea's

Encoding problem, I'd guess.
Can you attach one of these files?

And if you want to test something yourself: Open one of the files, then go to "save as", and check what option is choosen under "file type". It should be "text document", not "unicode text document".

You'll avoid all these problems if you use an editor better suited for the job, such as Notepad++ or XML Marker 1.1, both free.

Went onto the RI site and saw that some others had problems like this too. What's really strange, is that I made a copy of the file before I altered it, and, even when replacing this file, I still get the errors. A complete reinstall (of the mod) is the only thing that fixes it. Regardless, thanks for the help, and from now on, these 'wordpad' xml will only be modded with notepad ++.
