World Maps

I have just completed a 160x160 world map for Conquests!!! Check it out in the first post... I reckon it's by far my best yet! :D

EDIT: Double post... ;)

Actually, I did consider that when making the map. After all, many other map makers have added lots of little islands in the Pacific in their maps. But I felt that it wasn't realistic - in placing land on my maps, I go by the size of the islands in deciding whether or not to place them. And quite frankly, there are NO islands in that vicinity big enough to justify even a single tile of land being placed (which by the way represents about 125x125 km, or 80x80 miles).

You'll notice that I DID include some of the larger islands, though... Fiji and Hawaii for instance. ;)

However, if you feel that you want these islands, it's a very simple and quick job to add them in yourself. Just a few clicks of the mouse. :)

Horaaaayyyy!!!!!!!!!! Keep up the good work on the small maps......Havent played civ in a month, now I have to play due to these great maps

Thanks. :D This latest one isn't really "small" as such though (unless compared against some of the giant 200-300+ world maps). ;) But though it's a largish map, it's still a nice playable size (the same size as the default "huge" map size in Conquests; halfway between the "large" and "huge" map sizes in original Civ3). :)

Lord Parkin,
I was wondering if I could use your 80x80 map for a mod.......I will note you as the creator in the post.......

Go ahead! :) I have no problem with people using my maps for their mods - heck, that's half the reason I make them! :D (The other half of the reason being so that people can play the maps straight-up. ;) )

Could you maybe make some maps for mac?

i downloaded one of urs, and the extension is .biq, whereas for macs its .bic

the editor i have makes maps for a different version of civIII so it doesnt work

Well, the good news is that except for the largest (160x160) one, all of those world maps are .bic (because I made them before I got Conquests). So you can use any of those ones. :) Plus, as an added bonus, most of the maps that are in my signature are also .bics (except for the newer ones, which are generally towards the ends of each of the lists). So you can also have fun playing with any of those as well. ;)

It's really cute :)

I might use it for one of my mods just to see how THE SUPER CROWDED NATIONS OF EUROPE FARE!!!! lol

As a kiwi, the map is very enjoyable. As an Aucklander, having the South Island conquer the North is mroe uncomfortable!

But do you have any larger NZ maps in the pipeline? A Standard or a Large would go down nicely!

Well, I'm a South Islander myself. ;) :p

On the topic of the map though... actually, come to think of it, I have got an older New Zealand map which is Huge size (180x180). But that's only for vanilla Civ3, and also, it was the first map that I ever made so it's kind of warped up and inaccurate. (I hadn't worked out the proper technique at that time - I was going by 'feel' rather than an actual grid. ;) ) To be honest, I'd been planning to redo (and majorly improve) the map for Conquests for quite some time now - maybe at a slightly smaller size - but I'd never got around to it.

However, if you want I'd be happy to put that on my list of 'things to do'. :) It'll probably take a while, as I've got tonnes of other requests to attend to for Civ3 (plus there's Civ4 to check out ;) )... but I reckon that I could maybe have this done by, say, the end of January. (Perhaps sooner if time permits.) What do you say? :)

among the one's i've seen, this is the first map that's got correct starting location for korean civ. lol

anyways, thanks for the great map! now i don't have to play like 30 hours
to get one world-scale game done.

I presume you own the original Civ3 but not the Conquests expansion? You could try searching for a program that converts .biq files to .bic files... or you could just attempt to change the ".biq" to a ".bic" by manually changing the file name. (Not sure if that'd work.) Either way I can't imagine that it should be too difficult to convert. After all, the maps should be basically identical between original Civ3 and Conquests, with the exception of the volcano and marsh terrain.

Hope you manage to get it sorted. Sorry I can't be of more help. The only other thing I can suggest is to get a copy of Conquests for yourself - it should be pretty cheap these days, and it certainly improves on the original game a lot. :)

First of all these maps are great, and you obviously put a lot of effort into them (I know because I made a world map myself once or twice)! What you did you did very well!

I am unhappy, however, with your choice of projection. It seems to me you chose a map based on the Mercartor projection (or something similar). Unfortunately, the Mercartor projection distorts land area extremely. Land areas become bigger the nearer they are to the poles. This is why Sibiria and Northern Canada are so huge on Mercartor maps and Greenland is even bigger than Australia! (Wheras in reality, Australia is almost four times the size of Greenland.) Should you plan to make another world map I'd like to suggest to use a map based on a projection that maintains land area; also see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Map_projection#Equal-area.

Some of the articles for the listed projections contain very usable maps (big enough so you can resize them as needed). I especially suggest:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lambert_cylindrical_equal-area_projection
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gall–Peters_projection
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goode_homolosine_projection

Incidentially, Civ overestimates the importance of land area, meaning that unlike reality (think Great Britain, France, Spain, Japan, former Deutsches Reich), the military and economical power, not to mention scientifical output, is largely dependend on the land size of a given empire. Using a map projection that distorts land area thus multiplies this error within any given Civ game on such a map.

Finally I like to reinforce your decision to leave out the oceanic islands. Because even a single tile island allows founding of a city that uses up to 20 tiles of water; having the potential to become very strong economically (if you overcome the big hit in productivity). This trick is in fact used in the New World (name?) Scenario of Conquests, where the tiny Portugal has some cities on one tile islands and gets a power boost this way.

I chose the projection because it's one that I quite liked at the time. I don't have the time or inclination to make another map at the moment, as it's been almost 5 years now and I've moved on to Civ4 in the meantime. But if you're up for it, I'd welcome you to make a new map based on a projection you'd like... or edit mine to a different projection. (I'm happy for anyone to take my maps, edit them as they see fit, and repost them - as long as credit is given.) :)
