So far, it fails to be "convincingly immediate".

When that happens you get at most some form of temporary unification till the problem is sufficiently handled. World peace is totally diferent matter....

1. No more war.
2. No more violence.
3. No more individual internal turmoil.

Result: world peace.

And it might be a very dull world, at that. Or maybe a world just chock full of "fluffy clouds and flowers".

You forgot the unburied dead. Plenty of peace where there is no life to muck it up.

A generally accepted threat to racial survival might work. Communism has only worked in lifeboats and religious pogroms, so something similar might result in peace.

When that happens you get at most some form of temporary unification till the problem is sufficiently handled. World peace is totally diferent matter....

Why is it a different matter?

A genuine off planet threat could result in unification. I see no reason to revert unless all off planet threats are destroyed of otherwise disposed. Anything that forced humanity to see this world as a small place in a large context would do. We persist in acting as if we were the center and focus of all time and space.

Why is it a different matter?

Unification can be something very shallow. E.g. we may be united in one country or even members of one family but that doesnt exclude possibility of one intentionally killing the other. You have to remove the root for animosity among humans which essentialy is their ignorant mind frame churned around the multiple potentially hostile egos. Ego is capable of unification when its serves its limited puposes but not of psychic oneness which is precisely the element we need to develop to view any war as pure madness and absurdity. You wouldnt declare war on yourself would you?
