I think the religious attribute is extremely underrated. Cheap temples are incredible because they are so useful in expanding your city's borders to 2 squares instead of 1. Cheap cathedrals are also great because with the Sistine Chapel you get 6 (!) content people with one. When you combine these you can very easily plop down a city just outside of your rivals borders and steal some key resources. All this is aside from the fact that stealing your opponent's cities out from under them is GREAT! Especially since it doesn't cause war

Not really that weird. The Iroquois empire was entirely based on (fur) trade! Even before the arrival of the Dutch they traded heavily with other native tribes, over considerable distances.

I played 2 games only of Civ3, first the romans, second the zulu.
The zulu's special unit are the impis and they are great! they are fast, 2 hexes per turn and really kicked ass. I dont think I lost a single battle with them (except when attacking cities).

Dont think of a civ as the worst, think of it as the hardest to win with. If you get to a stage where you believe you have mastered a dificulty level dont necesarily go on to the next level. Try it again with the CSAs you are least used to. This will make you a more balanced player.
The anwser is simple if you start complaining during the next few months that GOTM always pick a civ you hate and that is why you get sh1t scores:
You are sh!t. If you are going to become a good player you will need to try all the different civs. If you think a civ is rubbish the simple anwser is that you are rubbish.

I have only played with the Zulus. The Russians suit my style of play better but I wanted to save them while I "learned the game". Having the scout at the beginning of the game is an incredible advantage. I often stole goody huts two blocks away from other civilizations' cities. It is not that you have a better chance of getting good goody huts, but the fact you can gobble them up that makes an expansionist civ very effective... I lead the countries I am in contact with in Science because of the advances I have found in Goody Huts.
And the special unit of Impi... it just isn't fair to be able to move that fast that early with good defense... The Chinese leader Mao is off in some looney bin and wets himself everytime he sees a feather that even resembles a headress of an Impi warrior...
The only problem with the Zulu is having your Golden Age soo early, it would be more effective later.

I like to play with all the civs. When I lose, I restart with the next one and so on. I always have random opponennts on.
I have had most success with the Persians and the Babylonians.
I had the most trouble with the Zulus. I want to use the impi on offence, because of their movement, but with only one attack. . . .
The computer seems to play the Russians, Egyptians, Persians and Aztecs the best. They are consistently the civs that are pushing for world domination.
The computer sucks at playing the Zulus and Iroquois.

I think they have all been cleverly balanced.
It is going to be fun learning how to win with each in turn.
Working out how to maximise the characteristics of each is going to be very satisfying.
People are slowly beginning to realise that you actually have to use your brains and imagination in this game.
It really is going to go down in history as the greatest game ever.

And dont forget that religious civ can freely switch governments. Usually in long games revolution happens at least twice and it will cost you 5 turns of Anarchy each time. 10 missed turns is not a small thing.

1.problem the game was designed by white us-americans and they gave the atributes to the red, sloughtered, ravaged iroqois/red idians so u realy dont know what the red idians are like becouse the us-americans put them in concentration camp where they (red-indians) live still.
2. problem some special units (british vessel, german tank) are underpowered, so u cant speak of a fair chance

I agree about the power of religion. The pivot point of govt switching is far and away one of the most powerful. Ex: move between monarchy and despotism; the former builds food supply (and people) and the latter uses said people in brutal forced labor! Terrible! A religious nation also has an easier time going on the offensive than does a militaristic when one keeps govts in mind.
Getting back to the topic of which civ is worst.... I can't believe you all picked Iroquois!! What morons...
Expansionist a) starts you off w/ pottery, so you can make granaries, so your pop goes up. b) starts you w/ a scout.... it doesn't matter what your dang starting science is! Playing on a continental or pangea map, you QUICKLY get enough tech from huts to be the leader in science, EVEN IF you have science of 0% (like I have so far!)

As for the indians... they probably are the worst for starting. Commercial is useless in the first half of the game... I tried them and failed.
To whoever confused Iroquois w/ Iraqi.... stop being stupid.

TODAY there is a lot of **** going on in the USA. the USA are the most danger country in the world, the states are a danger for stability and peace in the world. My problem is that bush said it was an attack on the western world but it was an attack of the USA itself and nothing else, we didnt push bin laden or hussein to power. the states may have the huges secret service in the world but the british or russian are still much more efective. Another thing is that the states are no democracy nomore. the power take over by bush and the republicans is calles a "Putsch" in german, a illegal powertakeover by republican court. if something like that would happend in europe the cities would burn and there would be shooting in the streets.
I dont hate the americans but the illegal us government is as evil and dengarous as the former soviet empire.
the jews were killed by the starnge german people in trance, i never can imagine that stuff. another thing bout red indians is wounded knee where the us army ravaged not armend indians for doing a dance. if former germany has been evil, usa has ever been evil but in the world war time. Oh, dear, this thing is getting wildly off-topic. Though I haven't yet played all the civs, and these questions clearly depend on your personal playing style, I think the Zulus (unless, of course, you like the early game rush w/Impis). If you don't dominate early, you're in trouble. Then again, my favorite, the Babylonians, would be pretty bad for those who like to play a militaristic style game.
