I'm listening to a podcast about Jim Fregosi and they are talking about how he was traded for Nolan Ryan. Now it seems like a poor trade, but maybe not then. What was the worst trade ever? Herschel Walker? Lou Brock?

Minnesota Vikings Received:

* RB Herschel Walker
* Dallas's 3rd round pick - 1990 (54) (Mike Jones)
* San Diego's 5th round pick - 1990 (116) (Reggie Thornton)
* Dallas's 10th round pick - 1990 (249) (Pat Newman)
* Dallas's 3rd round pick - 1991 (68) (Jake Reed)

Dallas Cowboys Received:

* LB Jesse Solomon
* LB David Howard
* CB Issiac Holt
* RB Darrin Nelson (traded to San Diego after he refused to report to Dallas)
* DE Alex Stewart
* Minnesota's 1st round pick in 1990 (21) They traded this pick along with pick (81) for pick (17) from Pittsburgh to draft (Emmitt Smith)
* Minnesota's 2nd round pick in 1990 (47) (Alexander Wright)
* Minnesota's 6th round pick in 1990 (158) (traded to New Orleans, who drafted James Williams)
* Minnesota's 1st round pick in 1991 (conditional) - (11) (Pat Harlow)
* Minnesota's 2nd round pick in 1991 (conditional) - (38) (Darryll Lewis)
* Minnesota's 2nd round pick in 1992 (conditional) - (37) (Darren Woodson)
* Minnesota's 3rd round pick in 1992 (conditional) - (71) (traded to New England, who drafted Kevin Turner)
* Minnesota's 1st round pick in 1993 (conditional) - (13) (traded to Philadelphia Eagles, and then to the Houston Oilers, who drafted Brad Hopkins)

For the sake of being Fair and Balanced TM

The Seahawks traded Joey Galloway to the Dallas Cowboys for the 19th pick of the 2000 first round pick (Shaun Alexander) and the 7th pick of the 2001 first round (Andre Carter)

Football: (Baltimore) Colts trading the rights to Elway to the Broncos.

Ever: Red Sox owner selling Babe Ruth to the Yankees to finance a musical.

To be fair, Elway said he would never play for the Colts if drafted by them.

It's gotta be babe ruth I mean in all thse other trdes people didn't know the other people were gonna be good, but everyone knew how good ruth was.

yeah I guess selling babe ruth for cash considerations is probably a pretty brutal trade. but to be fair, Ruth really started rocking the homers after he made it to the yankees.

Still could have gotten a lot more than they did.

Shaq for Caron Butler and a bag of doritos also comes to mind in the NBA.

Hockey: undisputably ERIC LINDROS.
TO PHILADELPHIA: Eric Lindros (Mr Concussion)
TO QUEBEC: Peter Forsberg, Steve Duchesne, Kerry Huffman, Mike Ricci, Ron Hextall, Chris Simon, Philadelphia's 1993 1st round draft choice (Jocelyn Thibault), Philadelphia's 1994 1st round draft choice (Nolan Baumgartner) and $15,000,000

NOTE: by about 1998, Flyers fans would have agreed to a one-on-one Lindros/Forsberg trade.

oh and a runner up is the Unger trade.

Hall Of Famer Unger played 914 consecutive games. his nickname is the "ironman". he played 2 full seasons with the red wings before being traded to the blues. the reason he was traded? he refused to cut his long hair, so his coach (a noted hard***) refused to let him play on the team.
TO ST LOUIS: Garry Unger, Wayne Connelly
TO DETROIT: Red Berenson and Tim Ecclestone

Unger: 1105 Games. 413 Goals. 391 Assists. 804 Points.
Berenson was decent, but not great. Ecclestone sucked, and connelly was a journeyman. but trading a star for a mediocre player because he wouldn't cut his hair is pretty damn bad in my books.

hey Azale, how about when the astros traded RP l anderson to the sox for 1B bagwell? :p

the phils made some pretty crappy trades over the years; they traded HoF f jenkins to the cubs for a bag-o-beans. sandberg and bowa to the cubs for de jesus; and the infamous "five for von" trade to the indians where the phils shipped out 5 players for von hayes.

the sixers made a terrible trade when they shipped barkley out in the early 90s. iirc, they got one decent player - jeff hornacek. but that was a far cry from the actual value of barkley imo.

the flyers trade for lindros was a disaster, too.

The Bucks traded the rights to Dirk for Robert "Tractor" Taylor. In retrospect, after Dirk won an MVP, and Tractor can't make the D league...that wasn't a good trade.

Interestingly the Ruth story is a myth. ESPN had a piece on it a few years ago. Ruth was disgruntled and wanted out of Boston. Several AL owners were boycotting the Sox because Frazee wasn't part of their social clique. Only the White Sox (who offered Shoeless Joe and less money) and the Yankees were willing to talk, and the Sox took the Yankees' offer.

While it isn't epic awful, John Tudor for George Hendrick was a total bust for the Pirates.

The Suns trading Dennis Johnson to the Celtics for Rick Robey.

How about this one I never knew about, the mariners traded Derek Lowe and Jason Veritek for none other than the great Heathcliff Slocumb. I love that guys name.
