Worth Buying?

Modding is great in CivIII - these excellent forums are what makes it all sooo easy - that and the new map / scenario editor that ships with the game.

BTW, I had a hard time getting into MOO3 - seemed more tedious than previous MOO. I've been a fan of the Paradox series (Europa Universalis / Victoria / Crusader Kings) and the Ascaron series (Patrician / Port Royale) as far as other empire builders goes.

^ we need to open up a separate forum for those games. Even though they are not Sid Meiers I love them!

I say: browse around the forum!

:( I did not find any threads on EU2....

Ok first impressions:
I got Civ "Play the World" - the only one they had. Don't laugh I bought it in French as I'm in a French speaking part of the world. So I could not study the game in detail, but here are my thoughts:

Good:
Graphics. Not real 3D like in AC, but a definite improvement from Civ 2.
Nation special units - love the idea!
Resources finally make sense! :)
Advanced diplomacy (still not AC level)
More than 7 civs on the map (at last!)
Epoch shift like in Rise of Nations and other games (better done this time)
Nice catapult bomabrdment :).

Bad:
No whatsoever historical information about technologies and units. IF it is there plz tell me where to find it.
Interface. Those round buttons make me sick! I was much more used to menus in Civ 2. Maybe I'll get used to it :S.
Wonder movies?
City Interface. Blured pictures, way too big city map, city info all over the place. Maybe it has some meaning all that ;).

Idea: Unit design would be nice. Like in AC. Ex: human + bronze cuirass + bronze + sword + leather armour (rest) = light hoplite?

Questions:
I heard there is a way to make armies by combining 2 or more units - true?
When I destoyed a city I got 2 slaves. Will they be gone if I destory the Germans and do they need to be fed?
Why did everyone ganged up on me when I attacked the Germans? :D

I'm year 1425 and just acuired Gunpowder (Easiest level) so don't laugh (too loudly :) ). More comments will follow if I finish my first game (Damn those Germans! )

If you win a battle with an Elite Unit (foot unit) you have a 1/16 chance of getting a Military Great Leader. Bring this to a city, and you can create an Army (or Rush Production in Vanilla and PtW). One this is complete, an army works like a galley on land. You load units in, and then you attack with the whole army.

When I destoyed a city I got 2 slaves. Will they be gone if I destory the Germans and do they need to be fed?
Nothing needs to ever be fed :D
Those two slaves are just Workers that you captured from Germany. They are yours. They have no upkeep cost, though, meaning that they don't deduct from your treasury every turn like normal untis do.

Why did everyone ganged up on me when I attacked the Germans?
The Germans signed Military Alliances with everyone. You should have done the same before they had the chance.

Also, go to the War Academy and read "Diety Settlers" and "Wonder Addiction".

Those are great articles, like the "Improve your opening play skills" of Cracker. But still I advise you to play a couple of games without this info, to get the sensation of learning new things. Like you did with CIV2 and AC. What's more fun than discovering things yourself?

Okay, not reading Diety Settlers won't affect you.

But not reading Wonder Addiction really affected my learning curve. You could say that not reading it had a long-term effect on me and stunted my growth.

Probably not much point as Paradox have a good forum. Apolyton started an EU forum, but it's deader than a dead thing.

Well, everyone should decide if they want to be on a high skill level fast or do if they want to have fun with the game and just see what happens. I played the game for half a year and got up to emperor before I started reading. Only to notice that I wasn't being efficient and made big mistakes. But at least I had fun.

There have been a few threads in the other games forum... There happens to be a link in my sig although the paradox forums obviously contain far far far more information...

Few more newbie questions :) :
How can I rush-build wonders?
Strategic Resources are in my land, but I don't recieve them, why?
I sometimes cannot irrigate when I'm right next to the sea. Bug? Or I can irrigate from the rivers only?
My people get unhappy when there are too many in town :(. Temples do not work as well. Military also. Help!!!!

Gelion, we have a quick answers thread at the top of this forum, created for these questions. But to answer them:

Strategic Resources and Luxuries have to be connected to your cities with roads. If you want to trade your resources or luxuries to another civ, then you have to have a trade route to that civ (either a road, harbor or airport).

You can only rush build wonders with Scientific Leaders. You have 3% or 5% (scientific civs) chance to get these when you are the first to discover a technology. In vanilla civ and PTW you can rush wonders with a military great leader, which you can get by winning a battle vs another civ with an elite unit. The military great leader can now only rush small wonders and buildings. You can also pre-build a wonder. Example: you want the Great Library, so before you have Literature you start building a palace. Once you have Literature you can switch from a palace to the Great Library.

Unhapiness: you can use the luxury slider in the F1 screen to make people happier. Temples DO help, as does the military police. But at a certain point you have to raise lux tax. Another thing that helps: luxuries.

Irrigation: you can indeed only irrigate next to FRESH water (lakes, rivers, other irrigated tiles).

There are other things to tell about trading, irrigation, unhapiness and building wonders, but these are the basics.

Thank you! :D I thought I'll play one game before reading the FAQ to make it more interesting, but I'm fed up with loosing wonder races :).
Irrigation also seemed strange. Anyway as soon as the ROmans will win or pesish I'll go to the FAQ thread. For now merci :D!
