Did you survive against the Romans?
Tell us about your game.

This was a tough game!

After some basic worker techs and meeting only Romans, I gambled on Polytheism and founded Hinduism. We needed culture somehow, and Stonehenge was unlikely and religions spreading to us was extremely unlikely with just Romans.

After that bee-lined Alpha which is always a good idea at high levels. Eastern Romans (Julius?) sealed there own fate by settling really close so went direct to Construction and hoped I would get there before Praets. Failed of course, but a huge stack of Cats is hard to argue against.

now I'm curious and will check how many have completed it

Told ya

since AFAIK, AIs always settle in place, Julius can blame me

:deal:

Fun times so far. It's been a game of cat-and-mouse of fighting in the fields and opportunistically going up against Roman Cities after a stack has built up critical mass... then defending and fighting in the fields until regaining critical mass with the next stack.

Almost all of the Wonders and Religions didn't go to my immediate neighbours, so there are several very strong Roman Empires still out there for me to go up against.

I dislike the way that Duns don't do what the docs say that they do. The only units that get the free Guerrilla I Promo are units which are able to receive a Guerrilla I Promotion via manual-assignment of a Promotion.

So, Warriors, Chariots, Axemen, and Spearmen don't get the Promo, as you can't normally assign the Guerilla I Promo to said units. Gaellic Warriors already come with the Promo, so they don't get an extra Promo or anything nice like that. Instead, it's only Archery-based units which benefit early on... I'm assuming that Gunpowder units will also get the Promo for free, but unless all of the other Roman Empires have their Cities all built next to Hills-based squares and if, for some reason, I only get Gunpowder without Military Tradition, then I might find a use for said Promos... otherwise, the code severely nerfs the value of the Dun relative to the documented design.

Guerrilla III Gaellic Warriors are fun, but I'm also asking myself if maybe I should have promoted them up the City Raider Promotion line instead.

I'm disappointed to find out that Warlords doesn't have a Woodsman III Promotion, but at least Warlords has a Guerrilla III Promotion, otherwise I'd probably dislike the Gaellic Warriors, too.

I like the Strategic Resource distribution of the map, at least in terms of our immediate neighbours. We can't expect to fight against only Archers, but can also minimize the number of Praets that we have to fight against... I think that I've fought a total of 1 Praetorian via fighting all of our immediate neighbours.

What a mess of a game I got myself into?

First I started this game about a month ago and forgot until this week. When I picked up I remembered what I did thus far (with some help).

I SIP and, according to the autolog, started a worker and Agriculture. Then to Pot and BW. In between founded Vienna on turn 41 with corn and gold in the BFC to SE of Capital. The cities were connected with the prebuilt roads and then it was a race toward PH to build the Oracle.

On T62 founded Talose and it must have been to NW with clam or crab. The tech progress was toward Alpha next, started on T80 before founding the next city to SSW of the capital with no food and fresh water access. This city gave me a reason to mine the Copper that was there to south. And JC had taken the next best city to SE and we did not have IW to settle many of the North city sites due to all the jungles.

On T85 that maniac Brennus DoWed JC because his chariots found a Roman desert mine without copper on the tile. The brave attacking force of 3 chariots kill the Archer securing :scan: the mystery resource and pillaged the mine and the road. Oh happiness...no more Preats. But oh oooooh, :( is that spear heading our way. Run you little horseys, run for you life.
Crap, where did those archers come from? Poor dead horsey's, but the last surviving Horsey can run from the mean spear :scared: :run:,
but where did that Roman Chariot come from? Rome has horses? None of my explorers had the decency to let me know about this fact? Noooooooooooo. This was not my (bad) plan.

Now the all three units from "First to Fight Brigade" are dead but the second wave is about to assault the Roman GW city on the flood plans to the SE. On T88 the brave Celtic Chariots capture the first Roman city. :whew:

In the mean time, the capital complete the Oracle and receives MC as a reward. The war was becoming a war of attrition due to some real bad luck for Celtic units. Nearly 5 units trying to raze the pasture get killed by the spear and archers. JC lives up to his reputation by attacking like a mad man but eventually we get his horses disconnected. The spear was neutralized eventually.

I am guessing by now I was disappointed with the losses I was experiencing and decided to stop the game on T95 (500BC). Then I picked up the game last week and made a bigger muck after the 0AD time.

But before that on T95 we completed Alpha and started Math only to find that Augustus was willing to trade it with us. So I gave him MC for Math, IW and Fishing. Then it was a race to Construction. But the war raged on with GW, Axes, defensive spears and Chariots. On T111 we capture another iron city located on the east coast and the copper city located south of Rome with copper in the BFC.

2 turns past the cut off we will learn Construction and build an academy in the capital. And....

I guess I should stop now that I have broken a rule of the law. Sort of.....:mischief:
