Uh, yeah, heck, my church has been known to hold service projects and help other religions build churches (not ever in my neighborhood, but I know they have done it).

Well you're a Mormon but still I don't understand the concept of helping other religions which you surely view as inherently evil.

Dont confuse Eran with a fundamentalist, he gets my vote for one of the most rational liberal christians on the board.

Eran might be a liberal not a fundamentalist (please feel free to clarify if you want Eran) but he said that the Mormon church helped other religions flourish. I don't want to speak for the Mormons but if a Christian (by my definition sorry Eran) church was to help a non Christian religion flourish then by definition that Church would be helping evil. Thoughts Eran?

Why would that be evil?

Are you trying to say christians view other religions as evil?

The first and great commandment (of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) is to love and obey God (whichever version each sees it as!) and to have no other gods but Him. All other religions cause their followers to go to Hell, therefore they are evil inherently.

Ok well most followers of christianity dont think that way, regardless if that makes them true christians or not.

Not even the pope is as single minded to view other religions as evil, maybe misguided, but not evil.

Some certainly believe that Muslims are Satan worshipers. They're taught this by religious leaders that keep them completely ignorant and feed them lies.

I recall the story of one African American minister who was very anti-Islamic in his views and comments. He preached that Islam was "preying on disenfranchised black youths and taking them away from the church."

A clever member of his community commented that if the Christian church was meeting their needs and providing them with the help they require, they wouldn't be turning to Islam. It's not as simple as Islam "stealing" members of his congregation, it's about him losing members.

Explain why a religion that sends its followers to Hell is not evil, please.

I assume you're making these comments because you believe that belief in Jesus Christ as God is a requirement for salvation and that religions preaching otherwise are condemning their followers to Hell.

You have to first assume that Christianity is the truth, and that's a huge leap to make.

Yes I am making that assumption, I'm also fairly sure the Pope makes that assumption also. ;)

No, because I live in the middle of the woods.

Geez, d'ye think everyone live in densely populated areas?

Of course not, but it is common that there is a gap between rural and urban/sub-urban acceptance of non-traditional religions and cultures. That's one of the insights people will hopefully get from this thread.

Actually, this is a very wrong thing to say. Christianity says that until you will fulfill certain requirements, that consist of a lot of things (be good, peaceful, do not hate, commit as little sins as possible, etc.) you will not be a real Christian ("and those who sin into my name will be taken away from me, and those who save into others' name will be taken to me") and not be sent to heaven. Real, [*read note], Christians will never go to hell.

* there is a verb for this in my language, describing a person that has achieved enlightment into God.

We dont view other religions as evil, and don't share the idea that "everybody else is going to hell". Its more of "you have some truth, we have a little more"

The Mormon Thread explains this in more detail.

What do we call someone that believes in God but doesn't meet the grade?

I'm a bit confused - you don't believe that Christianity requires you to be a Christian to go to Heaven and that all other religions are going to Hell?

My apologies, I haven't read that thread.

My answer is no. I wouldn't feel comftable with a Church or a synagouge being built here either. I am an athiest, I reject religion and their attempts to impose on me.
