Would you consider Civilization "violent"?

I never heard of a store, especially WalMart, setting their own standards for games over the ESRB rating. That's really odd. I think it's ridiculous that they would want you to be 17 for this game.

That happens all the time, stores set their own policies when it comes to that sort of thing. Here where I live there was a store that made no exceptions to the age limit, so there I was at 51 having to show my ID in order to prove I was old enough to play a game. They later eased up on that, no doubt due to the many complaints they were getting. I certainly spoke my mind about the inconvenience and absurdity of it. That's just political correctness gone wild.

I'm in Canada, so I'm not sure if that's got anything to do with the ESRB.

Certainly it does. Although we aren't forced to abide by the rating, most retailers do so voluntarily anyway. It's good for public relations, at least with some segments of the public. Some are just more zealous about it than others.

Well, Civ4 is one of the most violent games I have (Master of Orion 2 is more so, though). It allows you to cold-bloodedly and deliberately enslave or exterminate millions of people.

What?!?:dubious: That is just crazy! Honestly a few Mario games are more violent than Civ... I agree with TMIT, most little kids would not buy the game by 2 standards; It's boring, or it's too complicated. (The game kinda is boring, in an addictive way.:)) There is something messed up w/ the store who sold that too you... I got it at gamestop for $39.99 and you didn't need to be 17 or whatnot. And what is even freakier about that is gamestop is a UNIVERSAL game store, if they sell it to rascals who wouldn't?!?

No, it is not violent for anyone over the age of 3!:)

This reminds me of that Rachael Ray fiasco when she wore that scarf in the Dunkin Donuts ad and someone thought it looked like something the terrorists wear...it's just one of those "WTH???" kind of situations, you know?

I once described the basic premise of the game to a mate of mine and talked about what happened during one game.

His response was "What a horrible game".

Violent? a little bit. definitely nasty at points though.:lol::lol:

His response was "What a horrible game".

"Horrible" as in "violent and gory" or as in "boring and badly designed"?

"Horrible" as in "violent and gory" or as in "boring and badly designed"?

As in the former. Less "violent and gory" and more "I don't like the idea of having slavery and genocide as part of a game, and just why are you picking on the Ethiopeans? Poor guys are always starving from famine"

Mind you, this guy was a big fan of resident evil. So go figure.

I did explain that you don't have to go to war to win. I just like to :D

Recently I went with my mom to put Civ IV: Complete on layaway at Walmart (didn't have the $40-something at the moment). I noticed a weird buzzer went off and asked, the cashier said because you had to be at least 17 to buy the game, it's a good thing that my mom was there. (The irony of it is that the game is supposed to be a present for my 17th birthday, which is on September 3.)

It's obviously because you must be at least 17 to appreciate the awesomeness and depth of this game.

They also have to make sure you don't have school.

I always feel a little guilty when I'm machine-gunning elephants. :(

It's a safe bet that WalMart will not censor something it could otherwise sell to make money.

Actually, Walmart does 'censor' things on a regular basis. Albums with "Parental Advisory" labels will not be carried, though they are happy to carry highly edited versions that no longer need said label. The same happens with some movies. And just so you know, the Walmart versions generally make no mention of the fact that they aren't the genuine version.

Though techincally it isn't censorship since you can still get the real versions elsewhere.

I always feel a little guilty when I'm machine-gunning barbarian longbowmen...but then I remember that these are the douchenozzles who razed my cities back in 600 BC, so then I feel better!

I always feel a little traumatized whenever I see the longbowman knock down an axeman with that terrible staff of his. So violent.

I do think Fraxis is a bit on the leftist side, or the green side, at least (fine by me, not slammin' them). Why whales were nerfed, and become obsolete, as well as elephants.

I sure do miss those nice Whale shields, though. Or hammers. Whatever.

As for being violent, pfeh. You want to see violent, go play XMO: Wolverine

It is my contention that Civ does embrace large scale violence but manages to abstract it to an acceptable level.

So basically you are not against the concept of violence unless it is depicted viscerally and targeted towards the individual. It's nice to see you have such strong morals.

The reason you don't want kids over exposed to violence is so they don't end up imitating it. He's saying that his kids can't imitate conquering the world, so it's okay.

It could teach children that it is a good thing to attack other countries to expand the power and wealth of your own - so, it may not lead to your kids conquering the world, but it could lead to them voting Republican.
