Would you like a new Era in the game?

Going back to the topic the thread was started around, yes, I would like a new "Imperial" era. Also, over the musketman/rifleman issue, perhaps this could be solved by adding a new unit. The new unit would be a balance between rifles/muskets with maybe 20 or so strength and unlocking with cannons. It would be called something like "Line Infantry".
The historicality (if that is a word) behind this would be that it is after the early musketman already seen but before the rifled muskets used in the American Civil War. This would be what was used around the time of Napoleon.

I would like the following 'gunpowder' unit line-up:

Arquebusier (gunpowder)
Musketmen (Matchlock)
Line Infantry (Flintlock + bayonette)
Riflemen (Rifling)

I think you are right to include line infantry. Hopefully the tech tree is expanded enough so that they can be included. Also, welcome to the forums!

Between musket and rifling is only 1 tech, thus making pre-rifle gunpowder units irrelevenant in standard games. Maing it a 3 tech separation could work, if balanced and fitted in with everything else.

I think that three tech separation could work well... However, I think that it would be all right to keep the current tech separation. What could happen instead is that rilfemen have absurdly high production costs until a further, new tech is researched. This makes sense because rifling was around for a long time before rifled muskets, but the engineering details were not worked out for fast reloading of said weapons.

Or maybe you could just have the Huns nearly wipe a bunch of nations out, and they need several hundred years to recover.

Videos don't work for me since the indeo (sp?) video program that comes with civ2 can't install on Windows 7 64bit. I still have sound though. I'm not sure what your problem is there.

Its a sad day when you read someone throws out civ2...but to each his own. I have found it difficult to go back and play CivIII. Four is nice once in a while, but I never have a problem playing civ2. I just adore it too much:)

OFF: Getting Civ 2 to work under a virtual machine is really easy with a program like Virtuabox (which is completely free) and you can even have the wodner videos :-)

Interesting...I will definetly give this a try! Thanks!
