WTH the Soldiers from XCOM: Enemy Unknown are in this game!

I have to agree with you, the XCOM squad definitely becomes a distraction from the game. I absolutely love BNW but this feature has to be my biggest complaint. I mean the developers literally have the opportunity to put anything remotely possible for this future era unit. Why waste such an exciting creative opportunity on a gimmick.

I personally don't like XCOM (the original game that is, I haven't tried the recent re-make yet) but I don't mind there being some futuristic units being there for the very late game if they aren't overpowered or anything.

In terms of unit silliness, I think the Kris Swordsman is worse. Not only is their blade magical but some of the effects are downright ridiculous.

very end game unit , you got room for a little bit of fun there. I know i never had to build GDR so I guess I won t really see this one too.

I'm just upset there was no scenario for XCom units to fight the sectoid civ.

Oh come on guys... don't be so sensitive... they unlock at a time where most wars should've been decided anyways.

The immortal leaders from the wrong time period and civs building wonders from the other side of the world bother me far more.

I support the game throwing in fun little sillies in the late-game since they come at a time where the game's likely to be decided and stagnation can set in. So you can have a little bit of fun sending in your super plasma paratroopers designed to be anti-doom-robot infantry. Honestly I wish a bit more little bits of future stuff was around, since we do have GDRs and XCOM people, to where modern warfare units would be upgraded into similarly sci-fi-ish things. I want Hover Gunships and Variable Jets and Plasma Turrets and Space Marines and Air Destroyers (because seriously those things need a late-game upgrade) and stuff to spice up the late-game. :3

I saw the XCOM infantry for the first time in the tech tree last night (I hadn't really looked at all the modern stuff until last night, heh), and I just had to chuckle. I love that game, and the Goodluck, Commander! in the description sealed the deal for me as coolest unit in the game. Having "nostalgia" for such a new rehash (I never played the original, unfortunately) is a bit odd, but oh well. Easter eggs are fun when they're done tastefully, as in this case.

Interestingly enough, the BBFC gave XCOM a 12, so I'm fairly sure there are no "F-bombs" about - the PEGI rating must be based on violence. This rating is entirely irrelevant as far as Civ goes anyway, since they just shoot green plasma.

It's clearly just a lighthearted joke between the two development teams. The unit fills a spot on the late game tech tree. I really don't see how its any more of an issue than flying a rocket to Alpha Centauri is.

Technically you are playing a sci-fi game when you get to the information era, as we haven't even "finished" the information era IRL. :p

XCOM squads and Giant Death Robots are well within possibility within the next 50 - 100 years.

What realm are you talking about? XCOM squads battle invading extraterrestrials... How are they in any way relevant to our near future?

Who's to say in 100 years from now we won't be fighting off an alien invasion? Can you predict the future?

The re-make is good, and the Civ5 achievement regarding the XCOM squad is amazing. If your XCOM squad gets killed from full health in one turn, you get the achievement called "That's XCOM baby".

The blade of Kris Swordsmen isn't magical though, the effect shows the faith the swordsmen put in their kris, which they deem magical. The effects can be positive or negative as the people who used kris thought it can be either a good or evil blade, depending on circumstances. The effect rather paints the swordsmen fanatics of sorts instead of being magical.

If you're that far into the tech tree, the game is already over anyways. I think I've had/built GDRs maybe twice in all my Civ 5 games. Honestly, anything that far into the tech tree is just an easter egg and should be treated as such. If it bothers you, don't build it. If it really bothers you, I'm sure you can go in and delete the thing from the files, or there is a mod out there somewhere to do the same thing.

Immersion/realism in Civ has always been rather fleeting anyways. Ghandi throwing nukes, 6,000 year-old immortal leaders (anyone remember the newspapers in Civ 1 announcing retirement after a 6,000 year reign?), etc, etc. Its a game, not a history lesson (though it can inspire interest in history lessons).

XCOMs are a nod to their other game, put in a place where it has little effect.

For my part, while I loved XCOM (except that horribly written final mission), I don't think the unit's inclusion was appropriate. It doesn't upset me, but I think it was a poor choice.

XCOM, from its own reality, was created by a coalition of all governments to fight the alien invasion, using technology obtained by studying salvaged alien tech. To include an XCOM unit, then, implies an alien invasion, intergovernmental cooperation, and a research mechanism outside of the human norm. These notions clash with Civilization design.

All immersion aside, I wonder has none of you played a multiplayer game when those units kicked in? Or a single for that fact.

You're playing a game where Gandhi's a nuke-throwing sociopath, the Native Americans steal everyone's land, Renaissance painters paint for you deep into the Atomic Age, and Robert E. Lee advises you on how to move your swordsmen.

This game hasn't been totally realistic since day one, it never will be, it never should be, get over yourself.
