WYSIWYG editor?

Is there any particular why this editing feature (What You See Is What You Get, like Word) is disabled? I find it really nice and much more convinient (especially with the shortcuts it has) than typing the BB codes manually.

It brings minor performance costs for visiters (and the server, I guess), but the added utility far outways that IMHO. Besides, it can always be left off by default.

(Is another vBulletin administrator.)

FWIW, I have *never* seen a wysiwyg editor on any VB-based site I have visited. And I am so used to inserting BBCode, I would probably never use it anyway.

Isn't this called "font smoothing" or something like that?

I've seen it on a vb site. It slows down the loading of the posting page and can't be turned off.

At first, I thought so too. I had several thousand posts on one of the pre-WYSIWYG sites I administrated. But it really is far easier to just hit Ctrl+I or Ctrl+B than type out the codes.

Oh, and it is possible that the vB-based sites you have visited are still using an old version of vBulletin that does not support WYSIWYG (such as Apolyton). But CivFanatics is kept up to date, so why not?

It definitely can be turned off on an individual basis. User CP > Edit Options > Miscellaneous Options > Message Editor Interface.

To clarify, this creates an interface where if you add a link, italicize or bold text in the editor, the text is instantly formatted. There's no need to figure out or use the bb codes.

The WYSIWYG editor would presumably significantly slow the forum down, for basically no gain, considering just about everybody either knows VB code, or can use the VB code options at the top of the "Add Reply" field.

I am not really a big fan of the WYSIWYG editor, but I think we can enable it.

The editor only seems to work under IE though. I use FireFox and I just get the standard controls.

Well, between running Linux, and Opera having it's own keyboard shortcuts, I found it doesn't work with either Konqueror or Opera (at least in Linux). No big deal, for me. I use the Quick Reply box 90% of the time, anyway.

Doesn't work for me in Firefox, but I've seen it work in Firefox on other vBulletin forums. Of course, I'm glad it doesn't work, because it makes editing posts with links and images horrible.

The only use I can see for not using it is for quoting, and smilies you don't know the code for. Even though you can quote otherwise, I certainly don't use the quote quick reply option, out of habit mostly.

Thanks. It's working for me on Firefox, at least when I go to the full edit page (I'm using version 1.0.4). Keep in mind you also have to enable it manually - maybe that's why it isn't working for you guys or does only IE still show it? It would also be nice if it was enabled for quick reply (that's a separate option). People who want to deal with the performance issues of the WYSIWYG editor (not really any for me) would prefer having it for each thread, too, I think.

Over on Tha Sauce (Gaming News site I mod for) all of the news/article posting boxes are HTML-enabled, and run SLOW AS ALL HELL. Or at least load extremely slowly. This is really annoying when having to go back and edit a single page 40-50 times(like in preparing a large article) and having to wait 2-3 minutes for all the HTML to render inside the box. (In general, I don't like it.)

So, if I understand right, this allows you to use the standard Word type shortcuts for bold, etc, right?

If so, will it be able to read a cut and paste from Word? Like if I write a Word document (a turnlog perhaps) and use bold and italics there, will the editor be able to interpret that when I paste it into the reply box?

Yes, although fonts might not register. Boldness, italics, colour, etc. will work.

You said it's working on Firefox, but you ask "does only IE still show it?" If you're talking about the option to enable it, I don't think there would be any use for a code to determine your browser, and than give you to option to enable it based on that.

Sesn - Yes, that's one of the nice aspects of the WYSIWYG editor. Italics and bold in Word documents will (or should be, at least) copied, too.
