XCOM Squad!?

I think it's awesome!
I'm a fan of X-COM... so am biased I guess.

But they'd probably have all sorts of fun with futuristic units if it weren't for copyright concerns (and the cost involved). This is a futuristic themed unit they can use that they already have the rights to.

I'd rather have this themed version (it's more fun) than some generic/bland named "Laser Squad" or similar. (and if you get that reference, kudos to you) :)

Perhaps if they can get the licence, they can put the Death Star at the end of the tech tree as well, and then we can blow the map up and everyone loses. that'd be fun wouldn't it? :D

Someone would probably have a squad of X-Wings stationed for just such a thing. Which Civ would be best at hitting womprats? :)

Well, that sounds more like a multiplayer civ feature. The civ's on your planet race to build the Death Star to blow up the civ's on another planet.

I'm entirely indifferent to this. It's nice for them to include a nod to another game they make, but since I don't play it, meh. I don't really mind it being in the game.

Big No!

Get that out of my Civ V: Brave New World! I do not want advertising of other games on it. It should be an optional mod!

Not only that, if you look at the ESRB, it states that it is M-rated. Put an M-rated reference in an E10+-rated game? No thank you. There are more than enough M-rated references in E-rated and E10+-rated games: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ParentalBonus

I am no prude.

I would rather have futuristic androids fighting thank you. Putting references from another game got to be an early April Fool's joke (even if it is confirmed).

I will not buy Brave New World until that squad is removed completely or genericized.

By the way, I would easily pay money for a DLC that gave us an official sci-fi mod set in the X-COM universe, with aliens and such.

Balancing world peace while trying to band together against a threat from another planet?
Or perhaps research ultra-high linguistic techs to ally with the aliens and obliterate your earthly rivals?
With a bit of improvement to Civ5's diplomacy, this could be a really nice little future addition!

This.

It would be damn cool if the X-Com would be a World Council type of common project / resolution a la world games or ISS, me thinks. Add a mechanic for retrieving alien artifacts, and there you go :p

PS: An X-Com type of alien invasion scenario would totally rock

Apologies if a thread on this already exits!?

They are adding an 'XCOM' squad unit in as a new unit!? Is this a joke? Or are they really going to do this?

Yeah, don't like it, or the GDR for that sake, at all. Hopefully Civ6 wil be without these super hero units. Luckily I love all the other stuff I read about BNW, and it will make Civ5 a GREAT strategy game in line with the complete Civ4 it seems.

I simply could not help myself in drawing attention to this wonderful five character post which resurrected a three-month long dead thread. Nicely done mate; here, have an internet cookie.

As for the XCOM unit - I actually find it marginally more bearable than the GDR. Unlike the GDR, which was and is completely unnecessary, the XCOM squad will actually serve a useful role as a paratrooper upgrade.

To be honest, they really needed to sit down and rethink some of the units and their upgrade paths and the paratrooper was certainly one that qualified for that rethink. So, in that sense, it's a welcome development, even if it isn't really in-keeping with the Civ theme.

Really? This is what PCGaming has become?

How the mighty have fallen ( and had a tantrum on the way down. )

I personally never played X-COM, but I don't think that the actual squad is what is M-rated rather what they fight or blow up. I mean, by those standards, the death and mutilations in both World Wars were pretty mature, so shouldn't all units from those eras be banned? It's not like now that the X-COM are added, the units will explode in a pool of blood when dying, the Squad will just be toned down to the E10+-rating that every other vicious warrior in the game has. (ex: the samurai and berserkers were much more destructive and deadly than the units they are depicted by.) I'm sure they aren't going to change the rating away from the target audience just for one joke unit.

Personally, I do agree that the X-COM Squad is rather silly, but I'm not gonna let it keep me away from nine fantastic civs and many new features. I'll just incorperate it into my game some way. But, if you are more adamant about the X-COM inclusion, as many people are, I'm sure there will be a mod to get rid of them only seconds after the release date. ;)

I'm glad the developers have a sense of humor. It's something many of the players certainly could use.

I only recently tried out XCOM EU around the beginning of this year, and I'm a huge fan of the series now (and of Firaxis even more!) alongside Civ. I'm still enjoying Classic Ironman playthroughs every now and then. I'm even a bit disappointed that I never tried out the original in the past, as I would have had many years of enjoyment out of that one too, I'm sure.

But, even as a huge fan, I'm not crazy about the XCOM squad being in the game either. I'll probably get a kick out of seeing it the first time and performing a drop, but after that I may have to mod it out. Yeah, it gives the paratrooper an upgrade... yeah, it's so late in the game that it doesn't really matter (usually, either the game doesn't make it that far or it's already decided)... yeah, there's plenty of other things in the game that are quirky and unrealistic... but, it still doesn't sit that well.

Plus, the XCOM project represents humanity and are an alliance of the "civilizations" on Earth (or, your Earth-like map generated in Civ). They fry aliens, not other people. There's definitely a clash with its flavor.

If really late in the game, the barbarians gained the sectoid unit to amass and run amok (and camps become landing sites that can spawn in even revealed terrain), and the XCOM was a specialty unit used to hard-counter them only, then it would be pretty cool.

I'm struggling to decide if you're joking or not. You post made me crack a smile, in any case. Keep fighting the good fight!

Who dug up this zombie thread? You're responding to comments more than 2 months old.

LOL I actually hated the Giant Death Robot at one point, but I've gotten used to it. It's a beautiful unit, actually. As for the X-Com Squad, I'm equally ambivalent, but think I'll get used to that too. Civilization isn't supposed to be dead serious anyway. These science fiction units can easily be modded out if you don't want them present.

I applaud the Xcom squad. Just think of them as futuristic special forces. And to the people calling it an advertisement? What? It's an easter egg. You know, like how Civ2 had a Master of Magic and Master of Orion scenario in one of the expansion? Or like how Dungeon Keeper's last boss was the Avatar from Ultima? Or how in Ultima 7 there was a Kilrathi Spaceship crashed in a field? Or how Fallout had ... a billion of such references? They're not trying to sell you Xcom, they just felt it was a cool addition that would help balance out the late game tech tree.

Besides, we need more future era units. This, almost, explicit Fukuyama where history ends at 1990 is ridiculous.
