XCOM Squad!?

To be fair, the original XCOM games and Civ2 were both made by Microprose.

Good point. Had they started XCOM when BTS came out? Maybe the advertising is just tradition :p

Maybe this is why the Pueblo nation didn't want their leader in the game. They were so outraged by the inclusion of XCOM Squad.

If there is anything the XCOM squad hates as much as Aliens (I captalize Aliens because they are a huge problem in CiV now) it is injuns! :D

Well, the SW American tribes are apparently connected to the alien invasion in X-Files.

Conspiracy is afoot! Pope was actually an alien fleeing from XCOM.

HA HA!!! They should have sniffed him out long before now.

It took 4 XCOM squads to take down a GDR, along with a bit of help from a mech infantry. Isn't that a bit expensive though? You are wasting a chunk of resources and manpower there. The Sky Ranger looked pretty cool, flying by and dropping them though.

There are recent articles saying the unit is confirmed.

Most units take several attacks to kill now, assuming relative technological equality.

People see a joke unit/fun gag at the end of this demo and they think it's real? Wow ....
It's a joke, and it's real.

They tried showing it again Sunday, but they'd used up their time and got cut off.

i dont like the xcom unit. it dont fit in the game, same with the robot unit. just have to wait for a mod that removes xcom unit like i remove the robot. useless in this game

I'm more angry because they bring their wishes and ideas in the game without thinking about the consequenced and unbalances..

I don't think this comment makes sense. Firstly, bringing their wishes and ideas into the game is precisely what they are paid to do. Secondly, there's nothing that indicates the consequences of this and the balance implications haven't been thought of, or won't continue to be thought of as the expansion is worked on.

I remember building a ton of cities and once I went over my city-list, I got a city called "Thunderfall".

He's the admin of this forum, can anyone tell me if this is a tribute or is there an actual city called "Thunderfall"?

I didn't realise this was in Civ5 as well, but yes, in Civ3 there were cities called 'Thunderfall' and 'Apolyton' (which was the other main civ site at the time, owned back then by DanQ), as tributes to the fan community.

IIRC, there's no Thunderfall in Civ5. But Apolyton is still there.

i approve of the xcom squad :) please let it stay in brave new worlds. it is a futuristic unit anyway.

That's what you'd expect them to do if it was made as an injoke for the conference and they wanted to get their money's-worth by showing it off again. It's not what you'd obviously expect them to do if it was a standard part of the game - did they make any effort to show Poland off again, or trade routes?

Yes, they did. They did pretty much the whole demo all over again. More focus on tourism than Poland this time.

Yes, they mostly did the same demo.

I find it amusing that some people feel so outraged at the presence of GDR and plasma-wielding soldiers in a game that also includes sending a starship to Alpha Centauri as a viable victory condition...

Honestly, if you want your game to end in the Information Era, then finding the Higgs Boson should've been the science victory condition. :P

For me, seeing as I spent the weekend trying to finish up and test out my own near-future mod, I'm pretty happy to see these guys, as I think I know just the spot to slot them into my own tech tree (nearby the GDR!). Awesome to see some more futuristic units, as I had a tough time getting art for my supertanks and power armor infantry to work...

I think it would be hilarious if it was in the game but it required the Elerium resource to build them and Elerium didn't exist in the game.

If it was a joke, then at some point on Saturday, they'd let people in on it. On Sunday, their manner of delivery didn't even set it up as a joke. They only mentioned in passing that they were XCom.

And the cut-off was pretty obviously not staged.

They should build kinetic space weapons. They are theoretically possible with current technology. (Some countries probably already have them). They are basically titanium rods the size of a telephone pole. They are attached to satellites in space, and with computers can be released at exactly the right moment to hit any part of earth they want. They contain no explosive warhead, but hit the earth with such a huge velocity that it's impact is like a mini asteroid.

Rmember that meteroite that hit Russia recently? There is an official in the Russian government that claims it was actually America testing secret space weapons. That is not the official Russian story, it's just what this one individual is saying.

Even if this weaponry is totally science fiction, well so are giant death robots and xcom. So kinetic space weapons would be interesting in that very late era of the game.

Since this is somewhat a future units thread as well, here's another:

Tiny Death Robots!

Available at nanotechnology; overall powerful and expensive, specialized in being hard to kill (defense and garrison bonuses).

Oh, and one more:

Advanced Paratroopers!

Just like XCOM Troops except they don't use alien technology since aliens aren't in civ!

But, much as I like immersion, when it gets that far in the future it's all good. Advanced Paratroopers just doesn't have the same ring.
