You decalred war on... Umm, no I didn't

I have been find in BTS, quite a few of the subject events.

I did not declare war on that Civ, none of my vassals can declare war (AFAIK), and there is no 'bad blood' between us.

I find it hard to believe that this is a feature, unless it is something to do with spies, but then why can I not perform similar feats?

I guess you had a defensive pact with someone, and they were attacked.

I am aware of the seated member votes, open boarders, and peace talks for the AP, but the Civlopedia is not very helpful in regards to what the AP can allow, only the UN.

You probably did one of the following:

1) Declared war on a civ with a defensive pact thus automatically declaring war on another civ,
2) Declared war on a master or vassal and so automatically declared war on their vassal or master,
3) Agreed to an Apostolic Palace resolution,
4) You agreed when another civ asked you to declare war,
5) You were accidentally holding ALT when clicking their name ... (ok that one's pretty unlikely).

If none of these are the cause let us know.

EDIT
I guess another possibility I forgot to mention is:

6) Someone declared war on a civ with whom you had a defensive pact, thus ativating the pact and you declaring war on them. (I think this is how it works...)

The only one that would be plausible is number 5 - but I did not know about alt+click, or I just did not notice it.

Unless the defensive pacts are inherited, I did not have any; I was at peace with everyone; not part of any coalition; and no-one had asked for assistance.

Can you load a save from before it happened and see if it happens again? That way you could tell if it was just a clicking error or if it happened for a reason.

I have had to restart as I updated to 303. So far, I have not seen anymore of these in a regular game, but I have yet to try it under RFC.

Wait, you mean in Rhye's? I'm pretty sure there are a few wars scripted in there, such as the Mongolians declaring war on China. I'm pretty sure it's scripted, anyways.

I have had this happen to me in the unpatched version of BTS. Previously the Apostolic Palace had voted everyone to have Mutual Protection Pacts (or whatever they are in Civ4) with each other. In between turns I got the message that I had declared war on Catherine, one of my neighbours. I was just watching things cycle through before I got back control when this happened, so it wasn't caused by alt-clicking on her name or anything like that. All the Protection Pacts were cancelled, then while I was still watching wondering what had happened, everyone started to declare on Catherine. I've not got the save unfortunately.
