I got the hard drive thing fixed now I have a problem with installation, look for yourself...

was the name of the folder supposed to be Civ 4 not civ4? If so, omfg, redo installation...?

I'm not sure what the problem is, as you have not posted a screen shot or description of the installation error. When you install any software, including game,s it will give you the option/chance ot change the default installation location/folder. IT is ok to do this in about 90% of installation, as there are very few things out there that truly care where they are installed.

In this case, you want ot install CIV 4 (Vanilla) and BTS to the same "main" folder/location, ie don't install CIV 4 on the C: drive and BtS on the D: Drive.

Instead they should be in the following location or some variation of it:

CIV 4(Vanilla)
...\Firaxis\Civilization 4
BtS
...\Firaxis\Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword

You can call the folder you install into anything you like.

It didn't give me an installation error or give me the ability to choose what folder.

So what is the problem? Is there something not working in the game?

I dont think he is especcialy computer literate.

Its fine man, go have fun civving, your good.

Yes it did, you just didn't choose Custom Install, or something like that. If you want to free up space, you just get rid of your Civ 3 install. Once you start playing Civ 4, you won't want to go back.

PS: You really should go and get yourself a new hard drive. You're just asking for trouble trying to cram your OS and a bunch of games onto a 7.88 gig partition. I'm surprised your computer even boots up. Drives are cheap these days, you can get one for next to nothing.

He needs more than a new hard drive. By the looks of that screen shot not only is he running win2k but in 256 colors. His machine will have serious trouble playing civ 4 late game.

Gif images can't have more than 256 colors

Before you post any more threads, right-click on "My Computer", select "Properties", and post a screenshot of that. At least then we'll have an idea what kind of system you're dealing with.

I have a suspicion that it won't really be capable of running Civ4.

I can't go out and buy a new computer because I can't work and my dad says he isn't going to build a new computer until the new ASUS Motherboard and AMD Athlon chip comes out. My computer DOES run Civ 4, okay... does run civ 4, I have been playing for about a month and I got beyond the sword just 3 days ago. The file is saved as a gif to save uploading time. I play all my civ 4 games into the late game. IT DID NOT GIVE ME A CUSTOM SETUP OPTION... DID NOT. Like I said in a previous post.
Also, I am very computer literate, I know programming in Java and am learning C++ and have been working with computers for 13 years. Everyone in school looks to me for help with computers. This is basically the first problem I've had with installations, I have never installed an expansion I normally just get the gold edition, but since gold didn't come with BTS this is technically my first expansion I have installed.
My computer can run the game, trust me I know... I have 1.5 - 1.6 GHz (not sure exactly how much), 64 mb video card, 1gb of ram, and the only problem is my hard drive, my hard drive sucks major... (Censored).

EDIT: Also I only have civ 4 on the C disc, I have about 15 more gigs in other drives.

Since you've finally provided some actual information, as opposed to apparently random screenshots that leave the rest of us guessing, here's the situation:

BtS installs wherever Civ4 is installed. You have installed Civ4 on drive C:, and there's not enough space left to add BtS.

You must uninstall Civ4 from drive C: and reinstall to another drive which has more than a couple gigabytes free space. Then install BtS.

You could also simply move your existing Civ4 installation and modify the registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\INSTALLDIR". This is what a "very computer literate" person would have done in the first place, without assistance.

And FYI, save screenshots like yours in PNG format, not GIF. It's more compact.

I can't move the existing Civ 4 installation, I'm not sure if I said it in this post or in the other one, but my computer does NOT allow me to copy, paste, cut or move files and folders... And no viruses so something must be corrupted but I can't find out what.
And I have a little bit more than enough space, and it does install in the games folder, but it makes a new folder called Civ 3, has a subfolder called Beyond The Sword, and everything else is in there. It loads up to Init Audio then I get the program error...
So something has to be corrupted or something is messed up with my registry, and if not maybe I don't have the correct version of Civ 4... I'll try to look into it but thanks.

EDIT: Okay I downloaded the patch, and ran the installer, and it said no version of Civ 4 is installed, and something else... This is really pissing me off, I loved Civ 3 and never had problems, or any other game in that matter, but this game is giving me headaches.

This thread is my first nominee for "Most useless thread title of the week" :)

Seriously, go and edit your first post and change title of thread that might mean something to anyone who knows answers to your questions (whatever they are)

You don't "move folders" because you aren't changing the registry entries, hence the "game is not installed" message. Just nuke the old stuff and do a fresh install.

oWn3R,

Like Thanny and others have said, your C drive just doesn't have the space needed to install both CIV 4 and its Expansion Beyond the Sword (also known as BtS). BtS will automatically install itself into a folder in as I first posted above (post #2). This will be where ever CIV4 is located on your computer. As for your Init Audo "Program error" we have no idea what it is you are talking about? Are you sure you have the latest Direct X installed? I know from personal experience that the game will install but fail to run (CIV4 Vanilla) anyway if the Direct X is not up to date, even though the game comes withthe appropriate DirectX stuff).

What version of Windows are you using? If it is XP, do you have a Genuine copy of XP? Yes, it makes HUGE difference!

Pleas post some very specific informaiton about your system including, Motherboard Type, Chip type, Memeory Type and Amount, Operating System, Disk Space available (for each drive if needed). Also please post a screen shot of any/all errors you get, and in a spoiler box a copy of the text file from your DirectXDiagnostic Report (DXDiag).

Otherwise no one will be able to help you much more. So far the information you have provided us is scanty at best.

Okay, warlords and vanilla works fine, I run Windows 2k, and I think I've found the problem so thanks for all the help guys.

And steiner like I said, it's not a hardware issue cause I can run vanilla and warlords fine into the late game.

Does the whole problem boil down to BTS autmatically installing to the same dirive and destination as vanilla was?
It sounds like that's all it is, and if so it's an app specific problem, and a rare one because most people have more space to work with (Though I do know of some other games whos installations autoinstall to the previous destination as such)
It being an app specific thing it doesent mean that Own3r is somehow unskilled, anyone can a problem when something unexplected happens.
I hope it works for you now, or you can find a way to make it work. If worse comes to worse you can probably grab a 5G drive from a pawn shop dirt cheap for the game itself.

Hey man Tlalynet and everyone thanks for the help.

The problem was that the BTS would install into a folder Civ 3 in the Games folder instead of Civ 4... It created a new folder which was really weird...

But thanks for all the help guys.
