You Know What I REALLY Miss From Civ 2?

I miss the Caravans. It amounted to more micromanagement, having to actually establish Trade Routes and decide just what resource/luxury was to be transported. But they made the game more than just a "Build big army, squash opponent" scenario, which I have found to be the case with Civ3. Especially in industrial and modern ages, most advances seem to have only military applications, or provide only limited societal gains. Remember what it was like to destroy a Caravan full of stuff, depriving your opponents? I can't recall if you gained any of the transported goods, though. That should be brought back and adjusted if not. I don't agree about rushing wonders, but really miss the idea of shipping food. Caravans could help culture point tally's too. Let's just say that whatever I'm exporting isn't going to be generic goods. They will be crafted by MY civilization's people, and should have a distinctive flavor, affecting the importing Civ somewhat. It would also be more realistic to have xenophobic cultures that shun any outside influence. Any takers?

The caravans of Civ2 could give shields. Kind of cheesy - build a 500 shield wonder in 1 turn with 10 caravans.

What is cheesy with letting your whole empire contribute to a prestige project? I think it could rather could be regarded as a simulation of a tribute system.

Things I miss from Civ II; not much; but a few things:
engineers as already mentioned;
a nuclear defence system that I seem to remember appeared early enough in the game to actually be of some use;
Bombers/ ground attack aircraft that were worth building;
I think the old city screen was more attractive;
But the main thing was the far more convincing combat system where both units regularly lost points. in III the mathematics model seems much cruder.

I do miss:
-the rush building of wonders.. maybe not all of the way to completion, let's say 1/2 way (symbolizing that you've not bought, instead of "created" all the materials you'll need for it, and now it's time to assemble.)
-Also the ability to send food through your empire, although i would like to see it revamped (and the ability to export food to other countries woudl be a nice addition)
-I miss the engeniers (and i can't spell the word)
-High Council (it was a nice break in the game to pat yourself on the back.)
-City producing gurilla units when captured.. it was really realistic.. i mean look at iraq. Some will say it's represented in the resitors in the city, but, they can't really harm your war machine, just the production of the city. In real life resistors would be able to attack units in and around their city, and pillage terrain improvements (liek the french in WW2.) i'd like to see that brought back, but revamped of corse.
-Ability to air lift all units. C'mon, the settlers and workers can get on a 747 can't they?
that's all i can think of for now

Here's a minor gameplay issue I'd like to see reversed:
-cities should build stuff before happiness and riots are worked out. The number of times I've had a city start rioting, only for me to notice they wouldn't have rioted if they'd just built the temple they were one shield away from, it's so annoying!

I miss the that you could move on AI road and rail.

Horrible memories of my opponent getting one of my beautiful, fully-developed cities to switch over to him,including the spy in the city, selling every improvement in the city, then using my nice complete rail network to send (my) ex-spy to my next city, where he used the money from selling (my) city improvements to flip the place, and repeat, because I had read that Spy's in city's help increase resistance to flips. :mad:

I think he made it through about 70% of my empire that way in one turn before I surrendered tha geme. Never again would I develop perfect rail networks and place spies in every city... :blush:

I can't say I miss being able to move on an opponent's road and rail...

spekaing of cities and riots. I miss being able to rush build happiness improvments to quell them. It only makes sense that you'd be able to, you'd think they'd happily help if you were building say an areana for them to watch blood sport in and such.

On the contrary, in Civ 3 the mobs are more likely to destroy your current happiness improvements if you don't sort them out right away...

I miss the advisor videos!
"Would you defend our cities with haystacks, noble leader? Build City Walls!!"

I miss the casualty report... I know it sounds geekish but I used to always keep statistics of my nations losses for each major conflict :lol:

I seem to remember in Civ2 that you could send units along the rivers and it would act as 1/3 movement, the same as a road, in order to represent the ease of moving down/up stream ina boat rather than trudging through the surrounding landscape. That was good, and I miss that feature.

Using my Engineers to turn the Himalya Mountains into flat grassland....Seriously, that was a bit unrealistic though. I would bring back partisans though, but make them units of the Civ u captured the city from as opposed to "barbarians". No one considers the French resistance as barbarians like the Huns.

How when you sink enemy transport ships, you get told how many units just got destroyed along with their ship. There's nothing like being informed that you just destroyed seven enemy troops in one go! It's not something that makes Civ 3 any less fun for its absence, although any extra opportunity to be able to laugh evilly at the AI would be nice.

Yesterday I was playing Civ 2 and I lost 31 units because they weren't escorted properly :(

I would love a system like that. That's not geekish at all. And besides, this website is for civgeeks and civfanatics is it not?

What I'm missing the most in Civ3 is what a lot of persons are asking for in the Civ4 Suggestions Forum : food transportation.
In Civ2, you had to build a truck. When build, you could choose between the 3 ressources it possessed and food. Then, you move it to a city that is looking for the ressource of to which you want to give out food.

I cannot believe that no one has mentioned one of the best aspects of all missing from Civ 2, being able to give military units to another civ, allowing you to arm them with weapons they do not have the tech to build, similar to the US arming the Afghans against the Russians.

I am in a game now, where I really wanted to that. The Souix are attacking the Americans, both are my enemies, but I am not at war with the Americans, but the Souix are, the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Most countries in the world arm themselves with weapons beyond their technology that they get from weapons exporters such as the US, France, Israel, Germany, England, etc. This really, really needs to be in the game, one of the most realistic things and not in 3.

I really miss the advisors, I always liked the lady adviser. It's good to be the king!!!

Do you know what I DON'T miss from Civ II? The Statue of Liberty. It was so easy to blow through 000s of dollars getting a new tech every 3 (or 2) turns in Democracy, then change to Fundy and take over everyone else either with spies or force.

Also, I don't miss the following conversations:
Me: Him, I think I'll talk to my good friend Alexander/Genghis/whoever. Hello friend! Would you like to tra-
Him/Her: GIMMIE MONEY OR I WILL CRUSH YOU I AM SERIOUS GIVE IT TO ME NOW
Me: Uh, no.
Him/Her: OOH I WILL SPARE YOU THIS TIME GOODBYE. [window closes]

Everytime I tried to talk to another civ this would happen. But I do miss the info boxes that would tell me two civs I had no contact with had signed the "Ur Pact" to contain my agression. It was a good indicator that I was kicking ass.
