"You may not proceed until the patching process is complete"

So I was playing around after I looked something up in the Civilopedia while I was in the Final Frontier mod of BTS and accidentally hit the "Check for updates" button. It said something about an error, and then I hit OK and tried to navigate away. It said "You may not proceed until the patching process is complete" and so I figured it would take a while. So I joined these forums (after I waited ~10 mins) to find out:

How long will the "patching process" take to complete, or will it complete at all because of that error? Should I force-exit the game with ctrl-alt-del?

if you have not already - force quit the program. The ingame updater is broken.
You can download the newest patch (3.17) from the downloads database here or on the Firaxis homepage and install it from outside the game
