It's happened again - due to existing staff members having other commitments, we need at least one, possibly two, new members of staff.

This time we've decided to do it slightly differently: Instead of us picking someone that we think from their involvement in the community would make a good staff member, we're inviting anyone who would like to join the staff to apply.

What It Involves

  • Making some maps for games. You should expect that you will be creating at least a map every two months, and may be one map per month (and you will obviously not be able to compete in that game). It's open to some negotiation which games you do, but if you do have restrictions - eg. if you really want to play all WOTMs so don't want to create those maps, you should let us know when you apply.
  • Contributing to discussions on planning games, the future direction of GOTMs etc.
  • Responding to queries from players as appropriate.
  • Analyzing submitted games to determine whether a game has been played within the rules.

What We are Looking For

  • Honesty and integrity. We're trying to run an honest competition, and that won't work if the staff aren't honest!
  • Commitment. The work isn't onorous (typically some hours per week) but you do need to be available on a regular and ongoing basis.
  • Understanding of Civ. You don't need to be a top player, but you do need to be able to understand the game well enough to judge for example what is and isn't a balanced map and what would make a fun but challenging game. Also, you need to know, or be willing to learn, how to use Worldbuilder. And you should be familiar with vanilla Civ, Warlords and BtS.
  • Professional Attitude. This is particularly important because you'll be making at least some judgements on whether to include or exclude some submitted games. So you have to be able to assess a game based on the evidence available, putting aside any personal prejudices. You also need to work within the team and listen to the community outside: We don't for example want someone with a huge ego who ignores everyone else's wishes!
  • Respect for the GOTM Processes. In particular this means that if you have any kind of history of attempting to cheat in the games you've played, then you'll need to convince us that you've put that behind you and you do now respect the GOTM rules.
  • Track Record. You need to have been involved with the GOTM community, participating in discussions and submitting games for a reasonable period (at least several months).

What You Get in Return

Not much actually. You get a GOTM staff badge on your avatar, the satisfaction of doing a good job running the games. And if you're really nosey, you do get to see how the GOTM processes work behind the scenes.

How You Apply

Send a PM (private message) to either AlanH, DynamicSpirit or jesusin , saying you want to apply, and giving any information in support of your application. Your PM can be as long or as short as you want, but as a minimum you should probably give some idea of how much time you're able and willing to commit, why you think you're a good candidate and if you feel there's anything special you can contribute.

When's the Deadline

We'll hold the process open until Monday 19 January 2009. After that date, you can still apply (we don't want to be too rigid about the deadline), but you may find it's too late and we've already picked someone!

How We Will Make the Decision.

We will look at all the evidence available to us, including your forum posts and general involvement with the community, the games you've submitted, and what you tell us in your application. Based on that the existing staff members will (hopefully) come to a consensus on who the most suitable person is. Note that if we don't think anyone who applies is suitable, then we may just not appoint anyone - or revert to our old process of just picking someone :)

Good luck and we'll look forward to hearing from you! :mischief:

Thanks to the people who've contacted about this.

We've decided to extend the deadline to give more people a chance to apply, so if you think you might be interested in joining the GOTM staff, you can let us know by the end of January (Sunday 31st).

A brief update:

We had an excellent response to this invitation, and want to thank all who applied or gave it serious consideration. We are now close to announcing the new appointments, and this should happen in the next couple of days, when everyone involved has been informed of our decisions.

Our current list of candidates is, of course, closed, but I'm sure there will be future opportunities for those of you who are too busy right now, or who feel they are not quite ready for such weighty responsibilities :p

Whew! Why do I feel like I just dodged a bullet?
