In Civ, we all have stuff we do the same all the time, like early game build orders and tech paths. I've noticed my hands are always on asdf and the numpad when I play Civ, and they stay there almost all the time, except when I need to press I to irrigate, or something like that. I was just wondering if that's the same way everyone else uses their keyboard, or if they keep their fingers on different keys, or if they use the mouse instead of the keyboard most of the time.

Excuse the stupid name. It's the best I could come up with.

Mouse, primarily. Some operations are too tedious, and I'll Shift-U to upgrade a buncha units, or space -> skip turns on a lot of units, etc.

Numberpad for sure to move units, except for setting some gotos.

Mouse is necessary for city mgmt.

I like the G and J keys for moving. That way you don't have to keep the mouse button down.

If I could negotiate diplomacy with the keyboard I would. So I have to use the mouse there, but I use the keyboars wherever possible.

Shift-D will bring up the dialog, but from there you're mouse-dependent.

Diplomacy, Bombardment, city management are the only things to my knowlege that require the mouse. Civ 4 would be great if no mouse was needed!
I do use the mouse after laying rail everywhere, because it gets so tedious and if I manual move them, i wind up sending some troops off into the jungle.

Right hand on mouse, left hand on Shift+D. Just have to move for Shift+U. Everything else is easily done through the mouse and Advanced Unit Commands.

i also keep my left hand on asef instead of asdf with my middle finger on the "e" key. its really a habit for me after all the shooter games i've played that require me to constantly be on the move to stay alive. but for most commands i use my mouse simply because i'm afraid i'll press the wrong key.

I use the mouse to move and in all things that a keyboard can't so, but I will use hotkeys a lot because it's faster than using the mouse (moving with the mouse is the only way, I hate the keypad). I also wish you could scroll the map with the arrow keys.

With a laptop I don't have an easy access to a keypad, so I use mouse for movement almost solely. Many other commands, like irrigation, fortification, mining etc. I do with the keyboard commands.

I think older players (like me) are more likely to rely on the keyboard since that's what we used in the early days of computers. None of this fancy stuff around, back then... No, things have become way too easy for today's youth!

Well, I only use the keyboard for a few select things, like adjusting gold in diplomacy. Other than that, it's wireless mouse all the way. Yeah, Baby!

When playing on the laptop, hands on the mouse, with the index finger hitting 'r','b','i','Shift-R' as needed.

When playing on the desktop, I don't use the mouse as much.

keypad to move early in the game... then i lean more towards the mouse... haven't thought about where i rest my left hand.

Left hand on the mouse, right hand on the directional pad. I mostly use the keyboard, though, much quicker.

Both hands on the keyboard, unless I'm MMing. I really think it would be easier for me to have a hand on the mouse, because I can hit any of the hotkeys in civ on reflex.

I only use the keyboard to fortify and upgrade units also I use oit to type in stuff for diplomacy but that's it.

I used to move units with the NumPad, but since I'm now on a laptop, that's impractical. I do just about everything else you can do with the keyboard with the same, meaning I use my left hand alot when playing Civ.
