Hi I'm new here, it took me this long to finally get around to playing Civ2. Don't get me wrong, I played Civ1 a lot, but when I saw screenshots of Civ2, it turned me off.. and it still does; to this day, I have some trouble visualizing where cities go and such as to not have them overlap.

Anyway, I was wondering if people had favorite scenarios they would like to share, especially if they can point me to a download source? The standard game got boring very quickly for me, because it's sort of like Civ1 all over again. Yeah, you can exploit AI and economic engine quirks, but what I'd really like to do is see if there are any great WWII or other historical scenarios other than the one that comes with Multiplayer Gold.

Thanks! God bless Sid Meier!

P.S.

I've played Master of Orion and Master of Magic before. If anyone knows of a mod of Civ2 that plays even close to that of Master of Magic, I'd bow and kiss their feet. MoM is, imho, one of the top 10 games of all time.

axident,

The main civ sites have scenario forums with reviews and downloads. Here at CivFanatics, use the pulldown menu at the upper right corner of your screen to get to the Civ2 Scenario HOF (Hall of Fame) which will show you some of the best ones, sorted by category. Apolyton also has a Scenario League with many reviews and many people still making WW2 scenarios (which I am not so familiar with). They also have a link to the Spanish Civ2 site, another good source.

I haven't played MoM, but IMO two of the best fantasy scenarios are "Lord of the Rings" by Harlan Thompson and "Underdark" by Mr Temba.

You'll notice that there was more effort to rate and organize scenario collections a few years ago than now. For advice about more recent efforts, maybe someone else can help you, or you could visit one of the scenario forums.

Hi Peaster! Thanks, I found the archives not long after I posted this, but I couldn't find reviews for all of the scenarios.

1) If you like to compete (or check your results compared with those of experienced players), you can switch to the Spanish Civ2 site, check the Hall of Fame (you will notice that I hold almost all the records :) ), then download one of the scenarios created by JayBee and have a try: all of them are great fun.
Here is a link: http://spanish.apolyton.net/

2) You can also play the "Rome" and the "WW2" scenarios provided with the game. All the recordholders are strong civ2 players such as daveV, samson, Sodak,... (and myself :) ). Winning WW2 with one of the smaller civs (French, Spanish, Turks or Neutrals) is special fun.

3) If you prefer reading strategical reviews of scenarios created by the community, I have published a number at Apolyton (strategy forum). Here is a link to the last one I played: http://apolyton.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=123062&highlight=scenarios+from+the+community

LF - What are the house rules for playing scenarios competitively ? Can you try as many times as you want ? No replays within a game ? Must play Deity level ? Are you allowed to reveal the map, the events file, etc?

House rules:
1) Can play as many times as you want: o yes!!!
If someone else holds the record, you can play 20 games in a row, trying to improve it (I guess some players did ... but usually didn't publish their comparatively poor results :) ).

2) No replays
Except "clicking mistakes", as far as I am concerned ( + keeping the first turns of a previous game in order to save time when playing a new game).

3) Deity level
Yes (unless forbidden or otherwise specified by the author).

4) Revealing the map and other utilities and tricks
No, nothing, as far as I am concerned.
Xin Yu and smash loved caravan rehoming and usually made use of it, but of course they told us they did.

Whew, I'm not nearly as experienced as people crazy enough to play the French or something.. I played the Allies. But for French, Spanish, and Russian aggression, and some stupid errors on my part (since I had never played the scenario before, I didn't even know that certain cities had Wonders), I would've gotten all Axis cities in time. As it was, I was exactly one turn short of grabbing the last Axis city, having already eaten up what had remained of France and Spain.

Is Jesús Balsinde who you mean by Jaybee?

Thanks!

My favorite Civ2 scenario is the WW79 one. That's the scenario which I used to create one of my PlutoEmp scenarios. :D

Mine's the WWII one that comes w/ Classic/2.42 (since that and the Rome one are the only ones I can play).

LF, I am trying to give you a little competition in JB's "Of Celts and Iberians". I have played to 172BC and can probably finish in another 20 years if the hill cities don't create too much trouble. I am a little puzzled how you captured the size 1-2 objective cities, that just refuse to grow. But PLEASE don't tell me... I have a couple of ideas.

Red Front>MUST PLAY
Spartacus
2196 Days of War
Up the Deadly Boot
Imperium Romanum
Ansteig

Just a few of my favs.Of the ones that came with the game,Midgaard and Mars Now were my favs.

:) that's good news!
Unfortunately I played about 18 months ago and the "search" engine doesn't give any results previous to january 2004.
I guess I will have to play a few turns to help me remember what happened

I love the Imperialism scenario. Only thing about it i don't like is that the caravans dont ignore ZOC. But that is easy to change.

@LF - I just finished JB's "Of Celts and Iberians" in 153BC. So, now I am quite tired, but the scenario was very saitsifying. It does not get boring at the end like too many other scenarios do.

@Darth - FavFly's scenarios have a beautiful, professional look. But they were designed for 2.42, or maybe FW, and do not seem to work properly on MGE (an unusual twist!). If any MGE players want to play his LOTR scen (the last one), I can send you a corrected MGE version.

BTW - If you haven't tried Harlan's version, you are missing something!

I also like "Imperium Romanum", both for the fun and the mini-education on the Punic Wars. It drags a bit at the end, but the early struggle to be #1 is really fun.

Congratulations!

As daveV said: "all records are to be beaten".
I guess you know that you can send your savegame to the Spanish site and become #1 in the Hall of Fame ;) .

I mostly play the WW2 scenario.

My fave is to pick an underdog nation, like Spain or even the Neutrals, and just see how much I can improve the civilization, and survive the war.
