Thanks for the references. I have "Vanilla" and "Fantastic Worlds", but not MGE. Time to start looking on eBay, I guess.

Playing Civ 2 right now, ....yes the elegant simplicity
HOWEVER Civ 3. I got this game when it came inside a metal collector box.
--more modding capability in the included editor to get units /buildings to do what you want, (though one needs the 1.0 editor for best modding results)
--add civ specific units
--MOAR units ie the settler is divided into a settler and a worker.
-- capturing various units
--certain resources have to be available before certain units can be built ie NO ELEPHANT SPAM without ivory
--Runs out of the "box" on modern systems with hardly any finagling
--One can buy Civ 3 from most "anywhere" and frequently at low price bundled even "free" with something else.
--the graphics hold up on modern systems and are as good as they need to be ( its often harder to spot units on a map with the more modern 3d graphics).
--Is the AI better on Civ 3 than 2?
The most Civ3 I have played is the CCM 1 mod by Civinator
There are some things I do not like about Civ 3:
--submarines borked( fixed then unfixed by developer, though alternatives are suggested)
--settler houseboat bug, (new players must go online to learn the workarounds,)
--stacks of DOOM (as allowed by game design)
--Maps cannot have connecting corner land squares in the ocean that can be traversed through by sea units and vice versa (game design).
--The STEAM version must have certain files replaced/ added, if not this becomes especially apparent with MODS. (I have to put together a reinstall patch package that has editor 1.0, the save game editor that bests finds the reprobate house boat settler; and the missing needed Steam files).
The ai, yes the AI. For more challenge just ONE thing RANDOMLY choose what to research when the choices come up, ... an interesting game indeed.
