Your stealth bomber has been intercepted by .... ...... .... machine gun??? 85% damage. :crazyeye::crazyeye:

hehe, there are some things that I just dont believe... has anybody happend to had at some point this awful setbacks?
:goodjob:

hehe.. I know.. as a matter of fact I was annoyed to get my stealthbombers intercepted by machine-guns ... :)

The strealth bomber is definitely underpowered in Civ IV. The B-2 Spirit is not completely invisible, Reaper, but it has radar-defeating technology and has the radar crossection of a bird. This, combined with a black paint job and flying at night makes the plane "virtually" invisible. I personally hated having "Fighters" (not Jet Fighters) intercept mine. A B-2 flys at above 60,000ft, over 600mph and at night. Typically WWII piston fighters like the Spitfire, FW 190, or Mustang flew below 40,000 ft, under 450mph and in the daytime. The two planes would never have met in the same sky, let alone an intercept taking place. Like a fight between a shark and a grizzly bear.

Also, a Stealth Bomber ought to have a strength of about 50. It has the bombing power of whole Groups of WWII bombers. (Bomber Groups)

Perhaps for the basic game. And that's why fan generated content is so popular.

I'm reminded of the legendary galley-sinks-battleship story from Civ I. Some units should not even notice each other.

and i thought the real life stealth bomber was completely invisible:confused:

In 1999 the AA defences of Serbia shot down F117. The postcard was printed wiht hte photo of F117 saying "Sorry we did not know it was invisible". These are lame planes if seen thay dont stand chance.

I could understand if it was a SAM or Jet Fighter, but MG and piston fighters should never ever touch one.

Yes, I agree with you... also ... destroyers should have a 95% chance of intercepting Zeppelins... dont you think

Back in vanilla days, I had a stealth bomber shot down by a destroyer in a port city: none of the other units there had interception ability. Mind you, given that the (presumably) 15% chance of interception occurred, the strength ratio of 3:2 favours the destroyer heavily.

All true....

But even a stone thrower can take one down in landing/takeoff or if the pilot is stupid and goes way too low ;)

Of course not. It's not like they're using some sort of cloaking device, they're just hard to see on radar. They're still perfectly visible to the naked eye if you happen to be looking in the right place, at the right time.

Well, the F117 isn't a stealth bomber. I believe it was designed and categorized as an attack/assault aircraft in the 80s if I recall correctly, and it had somewhat inferior stealth technology when compared to the stealth bomber, the B2 Spirit. Plus the F117 shot down during the Kosovo Conflict was the only one ever lost to enemy fire. I don't believe any B2's were ever lost, though I may be incorrect.

But regardless...though a machine gun catching a stealth bomber is pretty lame, gameplay is certainly much more important than realism in this case.

True the b-2 can carry 5-10 times as much as a b-17, and modern bombs are better. But theres only a few b-2's and they only send a few at a time. They used to send 100's of bombers at a time in ww2. I like to think of the stealth bomber unit representing a single b-2. And the regular bomber representing a bomber group.

Yeah the f-117 sucked all around compared to the newer stealth craft. It cant defend itself and its stealth tech is way inferior to the B-2's.

But one hing to consider about the one F-117 that was shot down. It was shot down with a SAM modified to use the older style long wavelength radar. So basically it got shot down due to an older technology.

Like a fight between a shark and a grizzly bear.

Anyone else completely derailed by this idle comment? I missed the whole rest of the thread by thinking "Wow, that'd be cool!!"

Mostly Harmless;

We've already got bear barbarians. Someone ought to create shark pirates and then they could meet and have a fight in a port.

More Stealth trivia: The B-2 in its conventional role drops smart bombs. WWII bombers were SO inaccurate they had to drop thousands of bombs to destroy a target. A B-2 drops a single GPS (NAVSTAR) contolled bomb to destroy a single target. With an entire bombload, a Spirit can do the job of entire WW II bomber groups.

Rolo1; You're right. In fact our P-51 pilots would loiter around Luftwaffe bases and "bounce" Me-262 Jet fighters as they landed or took off. But in a real fight, it was like dealing with martian tripods.

And, also, I think that this kind of events (stealth bomber intercepted by machine gun and my 50 Exp Modern Armour being slamed by rifleman) is o.k. in the gameplay because the factor luck is important. Not to mention potential human error factor (in each modern war fought by US and Russia more airplanes were lost to collisions and friendly fire that to enemy fire.

There's a wonderful description in the novel 'Cry Wolf' of Ethiopian tribesmen taking out a couple of Italian tanks with railway sleepers; Jammed them into the sprockets and then set the poor sods on fire. It's not always luck but human ingenuity that can deal with advanced tech.
